Remember about a week ago, when we told you about T-Mobile planning on bringing you updates in-store, via an SD card? Well, it looks like T-Mobile has sealed the deal – and the date – for this update process. Users running a G2 or myTouch 4G that have yet to see the update to Android 2.3 can take their devices into an official T-Mo store starting August 6th, and can get their updates while they wait. As far as we can tell, this is only coming to users in the west and midwest regions for now, but we would assume that, as long as everything goes smoothly, we will probably see this coming nationwide sooner than later.
The update procedure goes a bit like this:
- Updating at the store can erase all the data on the device. The SD card will not lose data.
- Back up your data, synchronize your contacts to Google or T-Mobile Backup, and write down the names of all the applications you will want to re-install.
- The update can take up to 30 minutes to complete.
- The update requires that your phone has over 50% battery life at the store.
- The rep at the retail store will:
- Remove your personal SD card.
- Insert a software update SD card.
- Wait for the update to download and install on the device.
- Remove the software update SD card.
- Insert your personal SD card again.
So hit up your local T-Mo store and get your updates while they’re fresh. If you bring yours in, let us know how the experience goes in the comments below.
