Not so fast Apple and Microsoft: Feds will probe Nortel patent purchase.

It was big news when Apple, Microsoft, and RIM outbid Google for the Nortel patents. They could not allow Google to get the patents so they overpaid in an attempt to use them to derail Android, but it is possible that Google will win out.

The Justice Department is conducting an investigation to determine whether the purchase would unfairly hurt smartphone makers that use Google’s Android operating system.

The patent portfolio represents about 6.000 in total and they touch every aspect of telecommunications, including internet searching and social networking.

There has been approximately 50 lawsuits filed against Android manufacturers. It is so ridiculous, that Microsoft might be making more money from Android licensing deals than from sales of its own Windows Phone. It has put everyone in a position to look to buy companies just for patents. HTC recently bought S3 for patents against Apple, Google just bought 1,ooo IBM patents, and are looking at Interdigital for a possible source.

We need to stop these patent trolls that have no interest in innovation. I am confident that the Justice Department will find that Google is an antitrust victim, and that Apple, Microsoft, and RIM just blew $4.5 billion.

You think Apple is a patent troll, very funny.

This is a done deal, the DOJ has to look into this due to Googles complaint that “it not fair they lost”, Now Google can cry all it wants and if they really wanted the NORTEL patents they should have bid higher but they can’t play fair can they, all Google can do is cry and complain.

Word is on the inside this is a done deal, the NORTEL patents are owned by the Rockstar consortium and there is NOTHING google can do about it.

Since it’s fact that Google STOLE sun/oracles code and the design for the iPhone from Aaple while Eric The Mole was on Apples Board, your Trolling comments about Apple are laughable to say the least, since Apple is looked upon as the biggest innovator and designer in the world.

You can say what you will and you can lie all you want but it doesn’t change that fact.

You just another Apple Hater that has a bad outlook and likes to rewrite the truth.

Enjoy your bubble, Android will fade away soon, this it what happens when you steal IP from others.

If Apple is so innovative then why can’t they actually create a innovative phone. I will agree there first phone was innovative but that was how many years ago. Second of all the only reason Apple is going all sue happy is cuz android is gaining fast momentum in which will hurt there sales. Now instead of keeping up with real competitive advantages they buy the patents and then sue who ever has something kinda to theres in some cases are nothing to theres. I will admit i like apples style in design, i like there somewhat slimness i however do not like there handling of wanting to rule the world and block true innovation. I mean apple says they created the touch screen wasn’t that just what a month ago they patented that i mean seriously. I do understand how patient helps protect REAL INVENTERS from crooks but its just sick at what apple does to abuse the system. Im pretty sure many will agree with me and i agree with this writer. To some level i even agree with you.

@ Scotty How did Google steal Sun’s cide when Sun was in full support of Android? They were even the first company to build a development platform for Android. Oeacle bought Sun and decided to sue because there was no written agreement to use Sun’s “free” java code…. Get your facts straight before ranting on with your Apple fanboism

If Google were successful in obtaining the Nortel patents, would the writer of this article have the same view? I don’t think so. Microsoft, Apple and RIM, THREE phone developers have the Nortel patents. Would it be better if just one, google, had them? This is a game of corporate tic tac toe. Let google innovate, be successful and move on. They had no problem paying licensing fees for Nokias patents, so what’s the problem here? They should stop looking for a leg up, and just get on with it. Any complaints just sound infantile and churlish. Apple and Microsoft don’t whine about things, they just throw lawyers at you.

  • Marvin

@ Kroo the only reason Google wanted the patents was to protect itself from all the patent trolls. They weren’t the ones out there suing everyone and stifling innovation. Damn isnt Apple HTC’s for its Andriod’s phones ability to click on a link in an email? WTF is that. Is that really someone stealing your innovation? If you were to make an email client wouldn’t that be a basic feature? All of the lawsuits are just like that, crap. Android being the newcomer is at the mercy of crap like that unless the strengthen their patent portfolio with their own base-less crap to deter the trolls

I hope Apple and Microsoft lose the 4.5 billion they just put into the patent purchase. Apple is an innovator to which I agree when they made the first iPhone and blew everyone away but come on, you don’t always stay at the top, well sometimes u do, depends on what kind of products you make but Apple’s days are over unless they concentrate and spend wisely the money they have on R&D instead of Lawyers, Patents, and other crap. For heavens sake, get your head out of your bum Apple, its time for Google Android to reign UNLESS you bring something better to the table, which for now, seems very highly unlikely. Android rules, Apple drulez !
