With the launch of last year’s Galaxy S phone, and this year’s Galaxy S II phone, Samsung is quickly moving up to King status in the smartphone world.
It is expected that Samsung sold between 18 million and 21 million smartphones globally during the 2nd Quarter 2011 (April-June). They already beat Nokia which is at 16.7 million, but with Apple at 20.3 million, Samsung needs to come in on the high side of their estimate. Tablet sales are not included.
Even if Samsung doesn’t take out Apple in the 2nd Quarter, they will most likely accomplish it by the 3rd Quarter (July-September). The Galaxy S II is already selling faster than the Galaxy S.
“Samsung’s Android portfolio is selling strongly in most regions,” said Neil Mawston, a Long-based analyst at Strategy Analytics. “Samsung stands a reasonable chance of capturing the top spot on a quarterly basis if it can continue expanding its Android portfolio across high-growth markets like China and Brazil. Samsung and Apple will be at similar levels in smartphones by the end of the year.”
He went on to say that if you include basic phones, Samsung will probably have a 20 percent share this year as opposed to Nokia’s 26 percent. This would be the narrowest gap ever.
Of course Apple is not happy with these results and recently decided they can’t get it done with innovation, so they have chosen to start lawsuits with Samsung, as well as other Android device makers.
Sorry Apple, it is clear that Samsung is about to be crowned the new King of the smartphones.
