Google+ Opened to All Gmail Users…Sorta (update)

In a moment of excitement for both current Google+ users and people wanting to get in on the service, Google opened up its new service to everyone with a Gmail. At least that’s the plan. Users have been reporting that they haven’t been able to get accepted by the service, Gmail or no. In response, Google+’s official Twitter user account, @GooglePlusTweet, an unofficial Twitter user account for the service, has been sending out as many invites as it can to keep up with demand, but they’ve been hard pressed to keep up. In short, Google is definitely trying but give them just a bit longer to nail down the mass influx.

Update: My deepest apologies for posting that @GooglePlusTweet was an official user account for Google+. It was definitely an obvious error, and I should have caught it. The information regarding Google+ being open for everyone with a Gmail account however was valid, as reported by several users and other news sites. Thanks for the catch, guys!

Update 2: Apparently there seems to be confusion. At the time of this writing, which was after 11pm last night, Gmail users were reporting that they were able to get into the Google+ beta just by signing up, which coincided with a post by Google+’s head honcho, as well as a tweet from the above mentioned Twitter account. This went down shortly after. This is why I wrote “Users have been reporting that they haven’t been able to get accepted by the service, Gmail or no.” I did not update the article to state nor did we write another to state that users were now able to get into the service, so I assumed that everyone would understand that it’s still not open. Therefore, let me just come out and say that the service is still down. We will write another article as soon as the service comes back up, as this article had more to do with the situation last night. Thanks!

    GooglePlusTweet is not an official Google account, they say so themselves in one of their tweets:
    “Not an official google account, we are just a group of #googleplus enthusiasts trying to spread the love!”
    Do your homework first, before posting something that gives people false hope.

    @Googleplustweet isn’t Google’s Twitter account. They’re just.giving out invites from their account.

    > Google+’s official Twitter user account, @GooglePlusTweet,

    Umm, the bio for @GooglePlusTweet says, “Not an official google handle, just some Google+ enthusiasts tweeting all things #googleplus!” — are they just trying to make Google+ look bad? Are you just trying to make Google+ look bad?

    And of course there’s no love for Google Apps users… Grrrrrrr.

    at the very least print a retraction and/or correction…still invites only at the moment! :/

  • Mapex

    Why even post that it is open to all users with a gmail account???? That isn’t even close to true, it is just misleading very frustrating to users.

  • Dani

    Tried to join via my android after reading this post but still getting the invite only msg. When will this be active?

    Thanks!

  • stuart

    not a single piece of this article is true. please remove it as it is causing confusion.

  • Mitch Wright

    @Dani
    We honestly have no idea when this will be active again. It’s entirely contingent on when Google is ready for more beta testers. As soon as it opens up again, we’ll be sure to post another article. Thanks!

    @stuart
    Please read the whole article, including the updates. While it is no longer open, at the time of writing it was, which does in fact make the article true, which is why the article has not been removed. The updates do explain this. As soon as Google+ comes back open, we’ll be sure to post. Thanks!
