The May 2011 comScore numbers for U.S Mobile Subscriber Market Share are in, and Android continues to steamroll over the competition. For the three month period, 234 million Americans (ages 13 and older) used mobile devices. Of those, 76.8 million (32.8%) had a smartphone which is up 11 percent from the previous period.

Google’s Android was the top operating system with a 38.1% share which was up 5.1%. Apple came in second at 26.6% with a gain of 1.4%, but they moved ahead of RIM who is now ranked third at 24.7%, followed by Microsoft (5.8%), and Palm (2.4%). RIM was down 4.2% so it looks like Google is grabbing more of their market share than Apple is.

For Manufacturers, Samsung led the way with 24.8% followed by LG at 21.1%. They were both flat. Motorola dropped 1.0% to 15.1% which is most likely as a result of the Droid Bionic delays. Apple was the only manufacturer to gain share as they were up 1.2% to 8.7%. Just like in the operating systems market share results, Apple moved ahead of RIM.

I don’t think there are any surprises here. It is now officially a battle between Google and Apple. RIM has now moved to third (for platforms) and they will never get above that. It will be interesting to see what happens to RIM. I personally think they will be bought out by Microsoft who will be looking to gain some market share. The only other possibility is they adopt Android. I think we can all agree that they if nothing changes they will be going down very quick.
