Original Droid to get Froyo before Droid X

The blogs are filled today with the complete unveiling of the Droid X, Flash 10.1 for Android, and Android 2.2 aka Froyo. Android 2.2 is a big deal for some because the OS includes some major updates such as WiFi tethering etc. With the source code now fully available some surprising revelations were discovered, apparently the first Droid, released last year, will be getting its dessert before the new Droid X will when it is released on the 15th. At the unveiling ceremony that took place earlier today, Motorola said that the Droid X will launch with Android 2.1 and will be updated over-the-air to 2.2 and Flash 10.1 “later this summer,” around August if a leaked screen is to be believed, while current Droid owners will be receiving it around July!

Personally I will be waiting for the mod community to take over and deliver yet another successful mod that ports 2.2 to other phones. If you don’t trust the other sources, or just want to wait for the fully polished material to pop on to your Droid X, your time will come, just a little later than everyone else.

due date, release date

I find it admirable that they are putting the latest software on an older phone. It would be easy for them to just say, no more updates for the original droid. Buy the new one if you want the latest and greatest. This is very important to me as a customer. Gives me more confidence that they will continue to update the Droid X for a while.

I, ironically, agree with Ben. This shows both loyalty to customers and combats the “idea” of corporations being solely about the money. Makes me feel confident and cared about as a customer.

I’m not thrilled about having to wait an extra month, but this Droid x is amazing! So I guess all the droid owners can feel like they’re getting something. The droid x is the best device on the best network. I left the iphone 3gs (paid termination fees and all) for this phone and wow! Worth every penny. The android market is stacked with quality apps unlike iphone’s app store. Bigger isn’t always better you know. I’m absolutely blown away, and once Froyo arrives it’s going to get even better. This is the first OS to get flash right? It’s about time!
