Nokia Eyes Linux, Dismisses Android

During the recent "Nokia World" industry conference, Nokia's Ukko Lappalainen told Reuters that the Linux platform could take centre stage on future high-end Nokia handsets - dismissing the future use of Google's Android platform.

"In the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones."

Whilst Linux's role in the Smartphone industry is growing, thanks in part to the release of the Google Android platform, Lappalainen was keen to point out that Nokia will most likely stick to their own Linux development.

"I don't see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo."

Nokia currently use Linux maemo in their internet tablets, with Symbian software powering their handsets.

One Response to “Nokia Eyes Linux, Dismisses Android”

  1. Personally, I think the best thing would be a hybrid.

Maemo as the linux layer, with Dalvik running on top of it. Put that on the new N97, and add a few small features (2nd SIM card, T-Mobile-USA 3G, a more G1 like keyboard), and I’d be in pig heaven :-)
