Android Injector – Install your apk via USB

image

More and more these days the mobile carriers are putting locks on what you can and can’ t do with the smartphone that you spent your hard earned money on. Well, XDA has reported on something new by member ‘enzola’ called Android Injector. Through this application you can install an apk directly to you phone from your personal computer via USB.

I’m sure there are many of you out there frustrated that your pal wants to send you a cool app, and you come to find out you cannot install apk’s from ‘unknown sources’. Which essentially means, if it ain’t in the Android Market it ain’t going on your phone. But this is a great way to installing those out of market apps you’ve always wanted to try, without having to root your device.

Now head over to the XDA thread and try out Android Injector and let us know your thoughts in the comments. Also let the developer know what you think. These hard working guys that bring us all this cool stuff really deserve some credit, and at the very least some positive feedback on what they’ve accomplished.

About the Author: Adam Johnson

Adam was born and raised in Florida. Once a grown man traveled around the country working as a contract 3D mechanical designer. Finally settled in Gainesville, FL doing the same work in a permanent position for a global medical device company. His interest in mobile devices started with his Motorola Q9h which sported Windows Mobile 6.1. Unfortunately he was captured by the enemy and owned an iPhone3G for a short while, but that didn't last long through some dealings with the mobile carrier at the time. Finally he found a happy secure place among the Android community, starting with his HTC EVO 4G and hasn't looked back. All during his time with these various smartphones, he's dug deep into them, hacking away to get the best performance he could, all the while making his devices unique. As new Android devices are always on the horizon, he can't say what his next device will be, but he is Android for life, and his passion for all things Google will stand fast.

Prog doesn’t work. My device is discoverable, but I get this every time I try and install an app:

    Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.26

-d – directs command to the only connected USB device
returns an error if more than one USB device is present.
-e – directs command to the only running emulator.
returns an error if more than one emulator is running.
-s – directs command to the USB device or emulator with
the given serial number. Overrides ANDROID_SERIAL
    environment variable.
-p – simple product name like ‘sooner’, or
    a relative/absolute path to a product

^… what the shit does any of that even mean? I’ve tried everything to fix this to no avail.

I used it last night to get the free Amazon app of the day. Followed the directions as outlined by someone on Lifehacker and with a few tweaks, successfully downloaded and installed the app. The directions were for using a Motorola phone and I have a Samsung Captivate. Very pleased with the software.
