Are Nokia Preparing an Android Handset For 2009?

Engadget Mobile have today got their hands on a Nokia roadmap detailing a list of upcoming prototype devices for 2009.

It seems that the list was made available to groups within Nokia or third-party development partners, and covers some of their previous handset launches aswell as early codenamed prototypes scheduled for release next year.

One of the 2009 prototypes that caught our eye was Eitri, scheduled for release in Q2 of 2009, Eitri’s listed specification has some very Android favouring features.

Landscape candybar design with QWERTY keyboard
3.5-inch 640×350 display
Minimum 8GB ROM
MicroSD
Pressure sensitive touch UI with tactile feedback and gestures
Charging via USB
5MP AF camera with dual LED flash
Integrated compass and accelerometer
Proximity sensor
FM transmitter

Could it be that Nokia have decided to ‘hedge their bets’ and are preparing an Android ready device just in case?

I think this is complete BS. NOKIA has just acquired Symbian with an intent to make it open source. Why would they shoot themselves in the foot and put Android on one of their devices?

  2. It’s not BS due to the existence of Symbian … it’s BS because there’s no good reason to conclude that it would be an Android device. More likely that it’d be a Maemo device (at best, a Maemo device with Android compatibility).

  3. You do know that Nokia already has its own Linux/open source-based OS called Maemo right?

You probably are aware that this OS has recently been announced at the last Linux Developers conference as Maemo 5 right?

After that, you do know that Nokia already has Symbian OS devices in S40 and S60 flavors right?

In other words, your conclusions are reaching for air, lest you can pull proof otherwise. To wit I would say even then that Nokia using Android would be nothing more than for development and “check out the competition” purposes. As this is what most manufacturers do.
