Samsung EPIC 4G to get Gingerbread according to internal Sprint document

by Robert Nazarian
tagged , , , , ,

An internal page from Sprint shows that the Epic 4G will receive the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. The .rdf file (see the source link) does not format well with browsers, but you will find the following information:

SoftwareNumber ED12 OSName Google Android, L4 OSVendor Google, Qualcomm OSVersion Android 2.3

Samsung didn’t do a very good job with updates to Froyo, and supposedly they are having an easier time with Gingerbread. It does seem that Samsung is improving, but time will tell. We still do not even know when this update will take place, but Epic 4G owners should feel better with this news.

And I quote “Samsung didn’t do a very good job with updates to Froyo”…That is the biggest under statement of the year.

They really have no where to go but up.

Funny, I was trying to be nice, but honestly I would not buy a Samsung product until they prove they will update better or unless I know I am buying the device for a very short time frame.

Whatever.. The Epic runs amazing. It took a while for the update to come out but I’m running a custom 2.2 ROM overclocked to 1.2ghz with spare parts and it flies. I run navigation and Pandora, both resource intensive apps at the same time while bouncing through phone calls and texts and have no issues whatsoever. I would much rather have an amazing phone running 2.2 then a decent phone running 2.3. 2.2 only had minor updates compared to 2.1 anyways so why would you even let that be a factor.

Unbelievably bad update. Took a phone that was working OK on my Jawbone and made it work much more intermittantly. Doesn’t always answer the phone any longer losing calls. Volume level went down and you can’t keep it up. Removed the text search feature from the dial program. Now you have 3 or 4 extra steps while trying to locate a number in your contacts. Who would have thought they would have removed that? I’ve sent it back twice already and Sprint knows the issue is just the update. Any longer delay on this and it’s gone. What a joke. PS. I’ve left things out to keep this short. Neatly made phone. Just no OS worth keeping around.

I am known for my complaining about phones that don’t work for sh*t. :) Constantly. If it were an olympic sport I’d be captain of the US gold meal team… :) Since March, I’ve been running the current version out o’ the box–b/c frankly overclocking rooting and other stuff just kinda worries me…

Having said this… I love the phone. It works like no other phone I’ve had. I can get directions, look up stuff while I’m shopping…call folks… email folks… for the web it’s like having a mini-tablet… only I can call people too! So… if anyone is looking to get rid of your gently used epic for an ungodly cheap price because you hate it… LOL :) send it my way–I can think of nothing more fun than to have an extra one to overclock and root. :) IT ROCKS!!!

The deliberation with the 2.2 update and the lack of support for the Epic is the reason that I will NEVER buy another Samsung phone again. I traded an EVO for this phone and again HTC updates their products first. The Epic has better guts, but if there is no support then what difference does it make. I don’t care if they make a phone with 3 cores and an indestructible screen for 99.99. Maybe that’s why you should buy from companies that are dedicated to a certain sector of the market. They are #1 in TVs last in phones.

I will most definitely buy an HTC phone next. The sence UI, especially 3.0 is by far alot more attractive, supports scrollable widgets, and faster then the Epic do to the constant updates… Although I like my phone I don’t like having to download various apps just to get all the things Sence offers.
