Android 2.3, aka Gingerbread, Heading to the Evo 4G and other HTC Devices

According to the folks over at skatterteck, an HTC Employee during the CTIA Wireless 2011 event confirmed that not only would the Evo be getting Gingerbread soon, but several other HTC phones would also be getting some 2.3 love. According to the site, “The update is not just limited to that phone either, other HTC “legacy devices” which currently run on Android 2.2 Froyo will apparently also get the update.” There is apparently one catch though.

HTC, in an attempt to make sure people will still buy their new phones, will not release the update until another phone with GB already pre-installed is released. With rumors of a 3D Evo coming soon, my bet would be on that phone to be released soon and the Gingerbread update to be shortly after. For you Sense-loyalists out there (and you know who you are) this means you will also be getting the new Sense 2.0 soon, very cool! It’s nice to see HTC not abandoning their “older” phones (I’m looking at you Motorola and Samsung). I will definitely be keeping that in mind when the time comes to buy my next phone.

Show me the Ginger! I have heard rumours of June floating about. I am an HTC sense fan and owner btw.

I already have GB on my Evo via CyanogenMod 7 RC2… but this is still nice for those that don’t want to root. I got sick of waiting, not to mention the horrendous software Sprint forced on us.

I am extremely confused now – the news a few weeks ago was that HTC have confirmed that Gingerbread will be coming to legacy HTC devices after the Incredible S is launched (with Gingerbread)

Andrew, you’re correct about that. They have confirmed that legacy devices (desire hd, desire & desire) will be getting gingerbread in q2 (at least here in europe). I got the confirmation from a PR-person at HTC (european division)

I mean Desire HD, Desire Z and Desire

So how does this affect root users? If an OTA update comes out and I have root (but just the regular ROM running), will this cause problems with my phone, or am I good?

    Jim:
I as well. But I know A LOT of adults who don’t root because they don’t have the time or knowledge to. This is still GREAT news from HTC.

KB: If you have a root DO NOT accept an update. You will more than likely loose your root.

HTC is my favorite phone brand. Great widgets such as the mail and messages. My favorite is the clock. But I do really want the official Gingerbread on my droid incredible.

  • Carlos

What was stated in the article is very true. HTC does not leave their older models in the dust, unlike Samsung which does so on a HUGE scale. I just got the Samsung Transform and the phone i gave up was a samsung instinct and i am noticing a pattern here. What samsung does is it provides a software update that jacks up the device for the device it no longer wants to support yhan brings out a new one.
