T-Mobile Rolling Out G1 Update RC29
A handful of G1 users are reporting that their handsets have been updated today with a new update from T-Mobile.
The new update version, RC29 is believed to contain a number of bug fixes for the G1, but it is not yet known exactly what they are.

Is it just me or the ability to transfer data after pluggin in your usb to the computer is not working after the RC29.
I have tried it several times with no luck. It shows the removableDisk option but when you click on it, it give the insert disk.

I thought that too, but then if you plug it in if you notice on the notification bar there is a *usb icon* bring down the notification bar and you get a pop-up window that asks if you wish to mount the sd card to exchange data w/ pc. I guess it’s kinda manual now instead of before when it was automatic. Hope that helped!

yah i kinda like this new popup because before i could be in the middle of a game and need to charge my phone with the USB, and before it would minimize my game to show me the removable disk drive window which if you asked me was bit annoying, so it now give me the option to choose if i want to mount it to the PC.

I was experiencing the same thing with the data transfer after the update. Before I would plug it in and it would plug and play automatically before the update. Thanks to reading this blog I now know that I have to select for the notification screen to connect. It works like a charm. I kind a like it this way better because sometimes I’m just needing to charge my phone and not needing to interrupting what I’m doing by a popup.

The rc30 update was released to fix the security flaw which allowed people to gain root access to the g1 through telnet.

I got the rc30 update and so far I am THRILLED! I of course noticed the USB mounting option with the rc29 update but now my HANDS-FREE in my lexus works with the phone and it didn’t before… This was a MAJOR deal-breaker for me and I was looking at the iPhone just minutes before… now I don’t know if I need to switch.
Just wanted to let people know about this update if they had the same bluetooth problem!

I don’t understand what I had to do to transfer data now. There was nothing asking if you wish to mount the sd card to exchange data w/ pc. Maybe I have a pop-up window blocker. What should I do? Please help, I’m not an IT expert

Yea, Okay lets take a look at the g1 real quick, Okay I have the RC30 update. There is no difference. I didn’t have a blue tooth problem. Now remeber this is suppose to be the “best” phone T-mobile has to offer. Now lets dig deep into the phone. I will not knock on the phone cause I am a current user of the phone. BUT lets take a deeper look. For example the black berry 8800 can watch videos on the web. Any videos! The T mobile G1 at the current moment can only view “Youtube” videos. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! I just dont want to watch you tube videos. Maybe I want to watch some other videos like oion or something. ALSO now video capture? Major flaw at the moment. Now lets take a closer look at the camera. Oh its great camera! WOOHOOO! Wait what is this? Oh wow a lag time. When you take a picture it lags! Great job t mobile ! I can go to walmart buy a 30.00 phone and it takes pictures clearer and IT HAS A FLASH! So this is the best phone T-mobile has to offer? No it isnt, Is it the okay phone T-mobile has to offer? YUP! Back to what I was saying, Lets take a look at its nice G.P.S hmmm okay it can zoom to street view, this is neat… Wait no turn by turn voice direction? Okay, so this is the best phone? yea my As# the Black Berry 8800 gives Turn by Turn directions, And its not safe… Well next time I have to get directions from my G 1/2 phone ill make sure the next car accident i get into Ill make sure Ill sue T-mobile for no warning signs on the device when going into maps, and there is no turn by turn directions, soooo I guess I ahve to keep taken my eyes off the road to get from my house to DC. Okay… Now lets look at the network connection. Okay I called T-mobile and asked about the 3G network, They told me it will be in my area that Baltimore is coverd because its one of their “major” cities, WAIT its on the edge network? So lets call them again, OH NOW THEY TELL ME ONLY HALF OF BALTIMORE IS COVERD AND IT WILL TAKE YEARS FOR MY LOCATION TO HAVE 3G NETWORK CONNECTION. okay realy guys… My Sidekick LX was better…. Sorry I could capture videos on my sidekick, and so on… There was really no lag like the G1 has. Lets take a look at the outside of the phone. Okay touch screen responds really great to every touch. Screen brightness can be changed. It has a curve at the bottom, HTC claims its to get the mic closer to your mouth. Okay what ever :@( Wait no ear phone jack? And it has a music player? It has the nasty USB ear phone jack. URGH! Okay now the track ball. THIS IS SUCK A GREAT PHONE THEY PUT A FEATURE SUCH AS THE TRACK BALL ON IT THAT WAS DEVELOPED IN THE EARLY 90′S! CONGRADS T-MOBILE! You taken all your phones and took them apart and put them together into 1, and said oh new operating system Android…. Congrads T-mobile I think you made the worst phone. I am truly sorry but you could of done better. And to do a contract with google, and HTC… Its going to make it really hard to even develop apps to make the phone better… Turn by turn directions is against the google contract. but its unsafe… Hmmm i see a lawsuit coming..

Wow. For you to take your time and post this is unbelieveable , no one held a gun to your head and said buy the G1 motha f%$#a. Exactly, and if this blackberry 8800 is so great why didn’t you buy it. And if your old sidekick is so great. Why didn’t you buy it. And if you walmart phone is so great why didn’t you buy that. T mobile is workin on spreading their 3G network but maybe you shouldn’t live in the middle of no where , or maybe just did a little research before buying the phone. But you got all excited and decided you wanted to be the first person in you neighborhood to have the G1 well congrats. You just bought a phone you don’t like.

hey every1, just wanted to know, am i the only person reporting a problem with the G1 that it turns off on its own randomly and will NOT turn on again or take power charge once connected? i have had the phone replaced b/c of this problem and it keeps on happening even with the new replacement. every time it turns off, i have to remove the battery for 30 seconds and then put the battery back in so that it may work again. i dont understand what is going on with the phone or why this is happening, has any1 else experienced this problem????? this problem occurs every couple of days. thanks you.

I just wanted to say that i have the G1 and havent had a single problem with it and i bought it the hour it came out. Of course some people have had problems with it. But keep it mind this is the first version which is why its the G1 not the G2. and even the best of things have flaws.
But other then the battery my phone is great. If yours isnt so great. Contact htc or tmobile or whatever and see about getting aonther one, or sell it on ebay and buy another or just get another phone all together.
I do understand some peoples problems with it.
I must say i <3 mine.

I do have the problem with my phone turning off every couple of days an not being able to turn back on without removing the battery and putting it back in.
Was it difficult to convince tmobile to replace the phone?

im having a really big dilemma with my g1 trying to upload music.
i dont know how to get this rc29? or how to mount or anything im confused.
on settings it just says unmount/eject sd card?
ive plugged the usb into my computer and it comes up says new device android phone mass usb storage then when you try to install it it has an error :S am i doing something wrong or do i need to do something first? i need help!

after a couple of weeks and calls, battery replace, and all other test, they had no choice but to replace mine, they say it has a 1 yr manufacturers warranty or something like that, but my new replacement is still acting weird, try and get urs replaced 2. good luck

Just set the phone up for my wife…should have went with a Blackberry. Very hard to get the usb to work I/O error from computer when trying to add media to the SD card. No prob if using computer sd imput. Had to call support to get on the network. Not a good lauch for a product. I am sticking to BB for my next upgrade.

wow, i cant believe all the harsh comments on the phone. Its kinda funny actually. I opened the box read the manual and the phone works great for me. I think if someone is primarily worried about camera or video technology they should go buy themselves a camera or video recorder that’s an easy fix, after all you are purchasing a phone. The internet is awesome, the best iv seen. People wanted a phone with good internet, thats what they got and now they complain about secondary features……..its just funny.

You always have to mount your sd card in your phone before you can transfer data! Try fully on completing a task before you give negative feesback about it! Its not the phones falt your remedial! The g1 is a great phone, have had no problems very self explanitory software! Overall 9.5 out of 10! Apllications and internet are best I have yet to come across!

i jess got the newest update yesterday. better than the rc30 update. it makes it so that instead of typing stuff on google ,you can say what u want to search. itss pretty cool

Ok I just got the update and what I can see is different. Is that now there is the ability to use your voice to make a search on google… that is pretty cool to me

well my G1 i had to replace it the first time but after i got the Rc 29 and shut off my phone it wont turn on no matter what i try and i only had this replacement phone for 1 week. I guess if i get another one im not going to update my phone for a bit and ya. If anyone can solve that problem please respond. Thank you .

I’ve noticed that I can now use other USB chargers to charge my G1 since the update, where it used to only be the charger that was supplied that would work to charge.

Update was pushed Saturday night. Firmware 1.5. added a videocamera to the phone. It did corrupt my sd card so i had to format it. Good thing i only had a couple of songs on it. I guess google is to blame. Video camera is the only change I’ve noticed.

THE ONLY CHANGE!!!! so i guess the fact that G1 now has a better contact interface, ability to copy text from the browser, and AN ON SCREEN KEYBOARD are nothing.

I just got an update yesterday, idk what these RC29 or RC30 things are, but I for firmware 1.5.. there is now a video recorder, onscreen keyboard, I haven’t had to forceclose anything since the update your screen flips to the direction you’re holding it, even if the g1 keyboard is open. There’s more and more new things I’m finding out about this update. I love this phone, I’ve had sidekicks and I thought those were amazing. The camera works great, yea, there’s a little lag, but a lot of phones have that, idc really. All in all, this is an amazing phone.

Firstly I love this phone!! But like everyone I agree there are many things to hate about this phone!!!
1: Battery Life is the pitts! at the most i can go is 3 hours without charging it.. Its come to the point were I have to take my charger with me, I have 3 chargers, 1 at home, one in the car and one at work.
2: The connenction is terrible, the amount of times I have been unable to connect my calls or even recieve calls has been awful.. I did give my Phone bk to Tmobile to fix but after a week it was even worse of a problem and even if u switch it off, it still has the same problem. I have given up trying to fix it.
3. Despite getting the new software upgrade i have yet to get anything on the bluetooth and frankly in this day an age WHAT PHONE DOESNT HAVE BLUETOOTH???!!
4. The Camera and recorder? How hard is it to put in a 5megapixel camera in?? I dont even bother taking any picture anymore..
5. I have noticed that after the upgrade that my txt message doesnt go through right away like it use.I live in Central London and refuse to believe that there is no reception.
6. Y in gods name did they have to put in a usb port headphones.. how are u meant to charge ur phone when ur listening to the music? Using any of the applications tends to drain the battery I dont think the tmobile/google team thought this one through -Idiots!
But having said that there are many great things about the phone
1. Its touch screen and very easy to use – although sometimes i end up calling ppl accidently the first 2months that I got it- I have learned to not lend my phone to anyone in case thay dial someone like my boss!
2. The internet connection is fast and uploads easily. Like the Zoom feature.
3. The market is great – love the games and applications that I can download keeps me from being bored if i have nothing better to do.
4.The qwerty kepboard is great for a txt lover like my self. And now with the upgrade there the on-screen keyboard to so u dont need to slide the phone down.
Overall not bad for a 1st model but I had great expectations when Google put its name on this phone and have to say I am dissapointed! They have forgotern or have not bothered to put in the basic nessecity of a phone. Having said that I did just buy a BB to replace the G1 but i found myself going bk to the G1. Its just too damn nice to have!

Ok shan I’m blaming ALL of your issues for user error. None of what you said is true regarding your initial probs… 3 HOURS… could you exaggerate more? I upgraded from a blackberry Pearl and I couldnt be happier with my G1 that goes almost 2 days before charging.

If u ask heavy phone users of the g1 phone they too would complain, I have a few friends with the same phone n they have complained too… n dear if u tried using the internet for 30mins n then went onto make 1 hour call then ud see ur phone battery go from green to orange in quick time

My touch screen went all out of wacksuddenly and the update is alright but what’s has been shocking is when tmobile sent me a replacement phone they send me one with a screen full of scratches and my current phone’s (that I have not sent back yet but will tom) screen has not one scratch smudge anything! They expect me to downgrade to a refurbished phone that’s been in someones backpocket for too long all because they can’t steer away from glitches? This update made my touch screen untouchable and the “system reboot” is good for nothing. Not to mention this replacement phone is garbage. I type in a letter and it takes a second or so to show up on the screen. When I’m done typing i then must sit and wait to watch my words appear I didn’t know tmobile was so into magic.

@Jon people want the best of the best someimtes.. they know a product canbe better even if it isn’t the best, but they let bugs and glitches on the market. I never understood it but it comes down to a lack of testing and care fort the consumer. its gonna be brought anyways. the forums here might have just stopped 1 or 2 g1s from being brought, but really none so google and them still make their money with a buggy ass phone. Why not have it work 100% right and bugfree though? Isn’t that the goal? Or are you satisfied with the camera becoming glitchy and the video camera unviewable (low low quality) just to have good internet? I have been using internet explorer on my phone since the early 00’s (like 2003/04) with a pocket pc (hp ipaq with a builtin phone and GREAT camera). the g1 is just a mainstream phone everyone can easily get at tmobile with half sdecent internet… still not better than that toshiba phone or my old htc kaiser/tytn II which i imported from europe and it literally has TWO CAMERAS (one in the back for pics one in the front for self pics and video conferencing with anyone who has the same phone or software). G1 is old it cant do that neither an iphone.. so everything main market is really obsolete compared to getting a phone straight from hp/htc/toshiba/etc
