Xiaomi has slowly been working to expand itself to be a global competitor in the smartphone market. Thus far the company’s reach has been limited to the Chinese and Indian markets, though Xiaomi has been very successful in both. At a launch event, the company revealed their initial steps into the European market. They will start with the release of two of their existing smartphones, the Xiaomi Mi A1 and the Mi Mix 2, in Spain along with several other electronic devices.
The Xiaomi Mi A1 is the company’s Android One powered device that was developed with the help of Google to expand choices available in the Android One market. Android One handsets should benefit from quicker upgrades to Google’s mobile operating system and the Mi A1 is being released in Spain with Android Nougat now and an upgrade to Android Oreo in early 2018. Although the Mi A1 is oriented at the budget market, it does get a dual camera to go with the Snapdragon 625 processor and 5.5-inch full HD display. On launch, the Mi A1 will retail for €229 ($265 USD).
The second smartphone for the Spanish market is the Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi’s take on a large bezel-less device. The Mi Mix 2 comes with a 5.99-inch display, an 18:9 aspect ratio, and a Snapdragon 835 processor. Xiaomi will be selling the Mi Mix 2 for €499 ($578 USD) which is very competitive for the market segment.
Other devices Xiaomi will make available in Spain include:
- Mi Electric Scooter – €350 ($405 USD)
- Mi Box, a video streaming device – €75 ($87 USD)
- Mi Action Camera 4K – €135 ($156 USD)
- Mi Band 2, an activity tracker – €25 ($29 USD)
Along with the product releases, Xiaomi also announced they will open two Mi Stores in La Vaguada and Madrid Xanadú on this Friday, November 11th. Those will be the only sources for the smartphones until November 22nd when Xiaomi adds them to their online store along with several other retailers in the Spanish market.
