BGR is reporting that they have been given exclusive information regarding RIM and BlackBerry Messenger coming to Android, and they’re pretty sure it’s a done deal. Their ‘trusted sources’ are saying that BlackBerry Messenger may be a one-time fee app for any non-BlackBerry devices, and will offer the ability to BBM BlackBerry devices, but may not offer exclusive features like video, location and link sharing. I guess RIM wants to keep something for themselves, even though we have heard of RIM’s interest in running Android apps on other RIM devices, such as the BlackBerry PlayBook.
RIM believes that the BlackBerry Messenger product is what may turn some Android or iOS users onto, or back to BlackBerry devices if they get a chance to use it again regardless of the platform they are using now. I think it’s going to take a little more than some BBM teasing to make people switch, since there already exists other multi-platform communication apps like Kik and WhatsApp.
All in all though, this is pretty cool, and really has no downside for anyone, I just don’t think it’ll bring people to switching to BB devices.
