LG announces G6+ along with updates, new colors for G6

LG announced today that they will be rolling out a major update for the LG G6 starting in July, producing the device in two new colors, and they will release an upgraded version of the smartphone to be dubbed the LG G6+. Juno Cho, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company says “LG’s G series has always been about offering innovation and technology that we believe will appeal to as many customers as possible. By expanding the G6 lineup with differentiating features and  colors, consumers will have even more options to consider when shopping for a new smartphone.”

The new LG G6+ will come with 128GB of onboard storage to go with 6GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 821 processor. The LG G6+ will also get the 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC audio processor that is only available in limited markets in the LG G6. Another change that expands a previously limited feature is making wireless charging available in more markets. LG is also throwing in a pair of B&O PLAY premium earphones. The LG G6+ will be available in Astro Black, Marine Blue and Terra Gold. Pricing and markets have not been announced, but a U.S. release seems likely.

LG is also looking out for buyers of the original G6 by releasing an update that includes some new features. Headlining the upgrades is a new security option called Face Print that LG says is “more convenient to use than existing facial recognition technology.” LG says the new Face Print technology does not require users to press any buttons or turn the device on – they simply need to pick it up and hold it in front of their face.

LG says they are incorporating a new Low Power Consumption mode to take advantage of Google’s Contextual Hub Runtime Environment (CHRE) and Qualcomm’s Hexagon DSP architecture. The new mode is constantly collecting data from sensors and wireless connections to “improve the user experience with third party applications” while reducing power consumption.

Finally, LG is introducing a new “Covered Lens” warning to alert users that they may have a finger or thumb covering a portion of their camera lens when getting ready to snap a picture.

The LG G6 will also be available in two new colors – Marine Blue and Terra Gold. Both will have all black faces framing the FullVision display and a lenticular film on the back to create an “optical” effect.

The date for release of the software update will be made on a market by market basis.
