With the Pixel and more recent iterations of the Nexus line, Google has tried to be a little more transparent about exactly how long users can expect support for their devices. That’s included software and security updates, but now Google has clarified just how long you’ll be able to get tech support online and over the phone for your pure Android devices.
Unsurprisingly, the support dates line up with Google’s own end dates for security updates for the devices. If you have a Nexus 6 or Nexus 9, for example, your last major software upgrade was last October, but you’re guaranteed security updates until October of 2017, which is this year. Your ability to get phone or online support ends in October as well.
For the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, your last major software upgrade happens this September, with security updates and tech support running through September 2018. The Pixel and Pixel XL, being the newest devices, are guaranteed updates through October 2018 and total support through October 2019.
With all of that being said, this is just what Google guarantees for updates. As we make our way through the first of these dates we’ll find out if Google will stick hard and fast to those dates, or if some devices can expect a few extra updates past the cutoff.
