Google IO 2017 Coverage

Shopping capabilities comes to Google Assistant on Google Home

Want to order your daily essentials, but don’t want to run off to the store or spend time perusing Amazon? Now you can in a few simple steps with Google Assistant on your Google Home device.

After initial setup, you’ll be able to order home essentials merely by asking Google Home. This is, of course, through participating Google Express retailers, but that list includes big names like Costco, Whole Foods Market, Walgreens, PetSmart, Bed Bath & Beyond and many other stores.

It’s as simple as saying, “OK Google, order paper towels” or “OK Google, order multi-vitamins.” You will, of course, need to make sure you have a default payment method setup first, which you can find in Settings in the Google Home app.

Eventually it sounds like Google will be adding a sort of service or membership fee to this feature. But for now, Google Home owners can shop through April 30, 2017 without having to pay anything extra.

Google says we’ll see additional shopping features enabled through other apps and services over the coming months.
