Snapchat revealed in a recent filing for its IPO that it’s prioritizing development on its iOS app over the Android app.
The company says that, right now, Snapchat on iOS is exponentially more popular than Snapchat for Android. That said, the iOS app is taking priority as far as development goes.
From the S-1 filing:
“We have prioritized development of our products to operate with iOS operating systems rather than smartphones with Android operating systems.”
Snapchat, of course, realizes the huge risk that this is. Snapchat on iOS is extremely popular, but if that were to ever diminish and more people started adopting Snapchat on Android instead of iOS, Snapchat could be in for some serious trouble, as it noted in the S-1 filing under the Business Risks section:
“If we are unable to improve operability of our products on smartphones with Android operating systems, and those smartphones become more popular and fewer people use smartphones with iOS operating systems, our business could be seriously harmed.”
In other words, going forward, Snapchat’s development will be prioritized on iOS. But, we also might see the company looking for or developing different ways to improve the experience on Snapchat for Android to lower the overall company risk.
