Google officially launched its Daydream VR platform in November last year, but had very few phones that were ready to handle Daydream. The Pixel was, at first, the only option, although the Moto Z joined the Daydream-ready family soon after. But now Google is announcing on its blog a bunch of new phones getting the official Daydream-ready tag.
Being Daydream-ready, you’ll be able to discover a bunch of new and rich content found in the Daydream experience. There’s plenty of awesome stuff to see, including VR-based TV shows from Hulu.
Now, it doesn’t appear that any of these devices are Daydream-ready right now, as Google still lists them as “Coming Soon” on its website; however, they say the Axon 7 will have the capability with its upgrade to Android 7.0 Nougat soon. Both the Huawei Mate 9 Pro and ZenFone AR should be Daydream-ready straight out of the box, but it’s still interestingly listed as “Coming Soon” on Google’s website.
What’s a real shame is that the Huawei Mate 9 launched in the US isn’t Daydream-ready, at least not yet. But Huawei seems to be taking VR pretty seriously, so we might see some compatibility there sometime down the line. As a side note, the Chinese-based company is also preparing a Daydream-ready Huawei VR headset, but won’t be ready to launch for a couple months yet.
