Google officially launched the Daydream View on the Google Store today. To go with it, some Daydream content was made available just days before its release.
More details after the break.
Anyone will be able to head on over to the Google Store and pick up their very own Daydream View. But, do keep in mind that you’ll need a Daydream-ready phone to use the new VR headset. Right now, the Pixel and Pixel XL are the only official Daydream-ready devices.
If you want to pick one up, it’ll set you back $79. It’s supposed to be available in a few different colors, but immediately, it seems that Slate is the only option. With your purchase, you’ll enjoy free shipping.
As far as content goes, there’s only a handful of games with Mekorama and Hunters Gate being the most notable. There are some applications available too, most notably Fantastic Beasts and, of course, YouTube VR. Hulu is Daydream-optimized as well, so you should see some original content from there.
Hopefully we’ll see a regular release of original content. There’s some great hardware and software here, but as we all know, content is what makes or breaks things like this. After all, that’s what has been the issue with 4K adoption for some time now.
If you pre-ordered the Pixel phone (between October 5 and October 19), you should be getting a free Daydream View to go with the phone. Google sent a redemption code to your email so that you could claim a free Daydream View. If you went ahead and did that, and haven’t received it yet, it should be arriving anytime now. If not, be sure to head into your Google Store orders — you’ll be able to check the status of it there.
