The iPhone has fallen behind Android to become third in the race for mobile advertising, but both still take a backseat to Symbian’s platform. That’s right… Symbian.
It seems that even though both Apple and Google are pulling their teams together to try to appeal to developers and consumers alike with their mobile advertising platforms, they are still being beaten out by an OS that almost nobody think of with smartphones anymore… and not just by a little bit, either. In a study done by Smaato, a mobile ad measurement researcher, Symbian scored a Click-Through Rate of 339, while Android scored 118, followed by iPhone at 111.
This may be bad news for Apple, seeing as how Apple continues to discourage Google’s AdMob on their ad platform entirely. And Google isn’t taking it lightly. They feel that there should be more openness in the market and less exclusivity. Concerning Apple’s decisions on Google’s mobile ad platform, AdMob Chief Executive Omar Hamoui stated in a blog post, “This change is not in the best interests of users or developers. In the history of technology and innovation, it’s clear that competition delivers the best outcome.”
There’s no doubt that Apple is feeling the heat from Google when it comes to Android vs. iPhone. If Apple expects to get more traction in the mobile ad market, they should take into consideration that Google is very good at what they do. Advertising has been Google’s main source of company profit for years as a search engine, and they know what they’re doing.
