Amazon announced today it’s very own on-demand music streaming service. Dubbed Music Unlimited, Amazon says it makes “discovering and listening to music” easier than before.
Hit the break for details.
It can be a little confusing figuring out how this all fits into the puzzle that is Amazon’s different subscription services, especially considering that Amazon already has a music service–Prime Music. But, it’s important to see that Music Unlimited is distinctly different. In the past, Prime Music has only been available to Prime users with a catalog of only 2 million songs. With Music Unlimited, that catalog is boosted to tens of millions of songs and is open for the public to subscribe to.
Music Unlimited will cost non-Prime members a standard $10 per month. As disappointing as it may be, Prime members won’t be getting Music Unlimited for free, as has been tradition for many of Amazon’s services in the past. Instead, Prime members will be offered a discount, allowing them to subscribe to Music Unlimited for $8 per month or $80 per year.
If you want to play music exclusively on an Echo device, that discount is taken down to just $4 per month.
The key feature that makes Music Unlimited different from the many other music streaming services is the Alexa commands bundled in the app. Amazon will also be offering curated playlists, songs of the day and so much more.
Initially, Music Unlimited will be available in the US exclusively. The UK, Germany and Austria will be added to the list later this year. Around the same time, Amazon will roll out a Music Unlimited family plan for $15 per month or $150 per year. This would allow you to have up to 6 people on your plan.
