The Xperia XZ is the newest addition to Sony’s revamped Xperia X line, and it’s set to become the flagship device in the family that the Xperia X curiously was not. It’s high-end and offers the best of what Sony is capable of, but with a matching price tag.
If you wanted something a little higher end than the already-expensive Xperia X, you can lock in your preorder for the Xperia XZ on Amazon for $699 in either black, blue, or silver. That’s a price tag that puts the device right in the middle of the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge and Apple’s iPhones, but it picks up some improved hardware over the other Xperia X phones.
You’ll find a Snapdragon 820 CPU paired with 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot, and a USB type-C port, plus water resistance. The screen measures 5.2-inches with a 1080p resolution, which isn’t anything special in 2016, but where Sony is really putting their money is the camera. The Xperia XZ sports a 23-megapixel camera and a 13-megapixel front facing camera, both of which are touted as the best that Sony has ever used in a smartphone. They’re probably fantastic cameras, but that may not be worth the high price tag for many people.
The Xperia XZ is set for release on October 2nd, which isn’t far off. All of the devices sold from Amazon are unlocked, so you’re free to use them on compatible carriers in the US or internationally.
The Xperia XZ will likely be a very solid phone, but $699 is a lot to ask for a device that doesn’t have any standout features next to the latest and greatest from other OEMs.
