Cricket Wireless creates its most affordable plan yet

On Thursday, Cricket Wireless announced a new plan that is cheaper than anything the prepaid carrier has offered until now.

AT&T’s rising prepaid carrier is setting up a new plan that includes unlimited talk and text with 1GB of high-speed data for just $30 per month. Any data needed after that will be provided at reduced speeds of 128Kbps at most. Just don’t forget customers are throttled on AT&T’s network by having maximum speeds of 8Mbps. That may seem bad for you, but it’s actually a manageable thing for most people and has proven to be an afterthought for existing customers.

Here are Cricket Wireless’ current plans (with auto-pay on):

  • Basic: 2.5GB for $35 per month
  • Smart: 5GB for $45 per month
  • Pro: 10GB for $55 per month
  • Unlimited: Unlimited for $65 per month

Adding the $30 per month means Cricket Wireless will become even more attractive to people seeking affordable service plans, likely leading to further growth in subscribers in the next couple of months.

Coinciding with the launch of this new plan is a Back-to-School promotion in which new customers who switch to Cricket Wireless will get a free 4G LTE-ready phone — the Alcatel Streak, ZTE Sonata 3, and Kyocera Hydra View. Plus, the prepaid carrier is temporarily lowering the price of the Alcatel Idol 4 + VR Experience Pack, an exclusive here, from $199 to $99 when you bring your number to Cricket Wireless and set up a new account.

Both the Back-to-School promotion and the new $30 per month plan will be live online and in stores on September 9.
