Nougat will be the first Android version to have a regular maintenance schedule, according to some details in yesterday’s official Nougat announcement. This maintenance schedule will continue to improve upon Nougat, bringing “continued refinement and polish” to the new Android version.

Google has actually already started working on the first maintenance release of Nougat. The company is planning to make it available as a Developer Preview this fall, but didn’t provide any further details. You’ll likely be able to download any maintenance release early if you’re enrolled in the Android Beta Program.

From Google:

“We’re moving Nougat into a new regular maintenance schedule over the coming quarters. In fact, we’ve already started work on the first Nougat maintenance release, that will bring continued refinements and polish, and we’re planning to bring that to you this fall as a developer preview. Stay tuned!”

There weren’t any details on when the maintenance release might be available this fall, but it’s likely that we’ll see it around the same time Google’s next batch of Nexus devices are announced.
