As fall draws closer we start to look for the official launch of both Android 7.0 Nougat and new Nexus smartphones from Google. One of the peculiarities that has surfaced in recent leaks and rumors is a new onscreen home button for the Nexus devices. Thus far that home button has appeared as a static image as shown above. Now, an animation has surfaced showing how the button will be animated assuming this feature makes it to launch.
Speculation at this point is that the animation is triggered by a long press on the home button. That is believed to be the launch point for a variety of advanced options that will comprise the new Google Assistant, a kind of supercharged Google Now/Google On Tap, that was revealed during Google I/O this year. At that time, it appeared the Google Assistant was going to be a feature accessed through apps like the new Google Allo app. The latest thinking is that it will also be available within the operating system via the home button.
Sources that have seen the Google Assistant and this new animation in action indicate that turning off Google Now also turns off the animation, suggesting a close tie between the two. At present the new colored dots provide shortcuts to things like tasks, alarms or nearby places, options that sources think may change as the Assistant is developed for eventual release.
Another big question is whether this animation and the Google Assistant will be unique to the new Nexus devices or whether it will make its way to any Android device running Android 7.0. There have been some rumblings recently that Google may want to make some features only available on their Nexus devices to improve their feature list when compared to other Android devices and this special home button would be one way to do that.
Check out the animation below and let us know what you think about Google souping up the home button with additional features.
