Nokia Considering Next OS: MeeGo, Android, or Windows 7

by Michael Murphy
tagged , , ,

Nokia products world-wide hold a respectable portion of the mobile market. Their dumbphone Symbian OS still has the most users globally by most tallies, but their smartphones have had a hard time finding footing…largely because their OS was developed in-house, and they have floundered between several versions. But tomorrow is the day that it will become official: They are either going to stick with their own MeeGo (unlikely), or make the jump to either the Android or Windows Phone 7 OS for all future smartphones.

Whichever choice they make, Nokia throwing in with either Android or WP7 will greatly bolster the marketshare of the favored company, so tomorrow’s announcement will be a big one. And we’ll be sure and let you know as soon as we hear anything.

I thought Nokia CEO said that Android is bad for the companies that use it and that it will never be big, or something similar :P
If they had continued with Maemo instead of jumping on MeeGo with Intel and kept their users happy, we might have had 4 big smartphone OS(sorry RIM), Android, iOS, W7 and Maemo, but since they didn’t, they left their users without updates or new developers(you usually don’t code too much for an OS that is dead if you wanna make some money out of it).

BTW, I haven’t heard anyone saying W7 is good yet, only that it’s no multitasking and big ugly icons.

i think nokia really should ditch the symbian in order to compete with the good smartphones out there, or completely redesign and make it good as the android, iphone etc.

well, for “dumbphones” Symbian works well and people are used to it, but for their spartphones, yes, ditch Symbian and MeeGo, go Android. Nokia have always made brilliant hardware and I’d love to get a Nokia Android phone.

I was a Nokia fanboy until I went Android (Galaxy S) – Android on Nokia hardware would be awesome, but from reports around the web it looks like WP7 will be their choice. Shame.
Nokia did try to make it work with their own platforms (without keeping up with the rest of the world) for way too long, but what’s really been annoying me lately is people banging on about how rubbish Nokia is. Nokia hardware is fantastic. Some of their innovations have been phenomenal and far ahead of ios & android – wireless tethering (first via bluetooth, and then by wifi – which has only JUST become mainstream in ios & android) has been around for YEARS..
Yes, Nokia has made some huge stumbles lately but smartphones today owe a whole lot to the innovations that Nokia (amongst others) originally made.

I guess android its not god enough for nokia.

It wouldn’t make any sense (at least to me) investing on the Nokia Qt SDK as they have been doing recently, to drop it out of the picture in favor of Android or Windows now.

    I don’t think that’s going to happen.

    But, who knows. We’ll see.

Nokia choice was W7.. I guess that’s the end of Nokias smartphone department, before they have been using their own open source with Maemo and MeeGo, now they are just another W7 maker as LG, HTC and Samsung. Only difference is that the latter got Android phones that sell as well as the Microsoft phones they have to make because of Microsoft patent sue threats. So far it seems like W7 won’t win any real market share, iOS was the top dog until Android pushed them down, so well.. bye bye Nokia, it was fun to know you.
