The Nexus Player is no longer available on the Google Store

Google may want nothing to do with its original Nexus Player anymore, which launched a near two years ago. The Android TV set-top box vanished from the Google Store just yesterday.

The Nexus Player is no longer available to purchase on the Google Store, where it was first listed nearly two years ago. This leaves the NVIDIA SHIELD TV as the only available Android TV set-top box currently on Google’s Store.

At Google’s I/O 2016 Developers conference, the tech giant announced the addition of future TV partners including Xiaomi and others. We’re expecting new Android TV and Google Cast-equipped hardware in the near future, which may or may not have been the reason for eliminating the Nexus Player’s availability.

If you own a Nexus Player, there’s no need to worry as Google pretty much confirmed that the platform isn’t going away. If you’re in the market for a Nexus Player, the list of choices is quickly shrinking. Retailers like Best Buy and Newegg have already took down their sale listings. Who knows, maybe Google is preparing a new Nexus Player to launch in the fall alongside its much-anticipated Nexus smartphones and Daydream-equipped VR headsets. We’ll just have to wait and see.
