#RIPInstagram movement hopes to stop feed manipulation

Despite large numbers of users complaining about social media platforms trying to curate user feeds, it seems like every social media company wants to do that. The latest to join the effort is Instagram after announcing that it would implement some algorithms to curate user feeds instead of displaying posts in a strictly chronological order. Just as predictably as Instagram’s efforts to steer users to certain content, a user movement has emerged to object to the change via a petition on change.org.

According to the petition’s creator, Sarah Heard, the effort is keyed off of Instagram’s own statement that they will “listen to your feedback” in trying to create this new experience. Heard also notes that the change to an algorithm driven feed will harm small business owners and artists.

If Instagram insists on implementing the new algorithms, the petition hopes to get Instagram to at least give users the option to choose how they want to see their feed appear.

Organizers also created the #RIPInstagram hashtag for users to tag their images when posting to Instagram to help get the word out. This is clearly modeled after the #RIPTwitter tag that surfaced after Twitter announced that they were going to start manipulating the feeds that users see on the service. That effort was successful in getting #RIPTwitter to trend on the service and eventually forced Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey to backtrack a bit and promise that users could opt out of Twitter’s new algorithms.
