Android 2.1 Eclair – More HTC love for the UK?

The hotly discussed ‘will they, won’t they’ yesteryear debate of Ross and Rachel from friends pales in comparison with the saga of the HTC Android 2.1 Eclair update. With a large number of users stuck on older version, figuratively belching fury at HTC in disgust, there are more noises being made of a June release – for the UK.

Best Mobile Contracts have reported that HTC Taiwan has announced that Android 2.1 has been released for a number of HTC phones. Details are naturally sketchy, but it’s believed that update should be available for the neglected Hero.

Still, a 2.2 update would be preferred, but I guess UK users can hope to have this some time in 2012. Before the world ends, preferably.

HTC support emailed me back with this yesterday:

“Thank you for contacting us. In regards to the 2.1 update, Htc will be providing a free update to Éclair(2.1) for European HTC Hero variants.’ starting in June’, anyone owning an HTC Hero will receive an initial preparatory update, shortly followed by the full Éclair update. For the full update, we would recommend using a free wi-fi hotspot or an unlimited data plan, otherwise standard data charges may apply. In regards to the 2.2 update, we are considering a Froyo(2.2) upgrade for some models of our phones, but we are still analyzing the impact this will have on the user experience. We will announce a full list of phones and dates once we are closer to launching the upgrades. I trust that this resolves your query, please do not hesitate to contact us again if required. Thank you for contacting HTC. Kind regards, HTC”

I received the exact same answer as JamieS from HTC Spain.

I hope we get Froyo. Still haven’t rooted or used custom ROMs. I’m a bit nervous to do so. Don’t want to brick the phone.
