Acer, Are You Phasing Out Netbooks Or Not? Apparently Not.

Apparently the last 24 hours have led to some uncertainty at Acer regarding the intention of their tablets. It was widely reported yesterday that Acer was aligning their tablets to phase out their very popular netbook line. Presumably, the Taiwan sales manager yesterday stated that they “…are aimed at phasing out netbooks… That’s the direction of the market.” Acer’s netbooks have been quite successful, and while tablets seem to be the way of the future, does that mean that there is no longer a market for netbooks?

Well, Acer issued a statement today, refuting that statement outright. “According to recent statement from Sales Manager based in Taiwan, Acer Inc. confirms that the company will not phase out netbooks in favor of tablets.” They went on to say that tablets and and netbooks are both “pieces of the mosaic,” and that a “multitude of instruments” will find the tablet and netbook walking side by side, rather than competing for the same marketshare.

This is good news, and very believable, as they both seem to serve a very separate purpose. I can see wanting both, and using them in different situations, so I am eager to see each find their niche. In the meantime, it’s good to see that Acer plans to support both products adequarely.

I for one don’t want netbooks to die. A large netbook is the perfect device for students and researchers who need something small and portable (for trips to and from library) but still primarily type on the thing, and want to sync their phone to it.
