HTC Hero – Android 2.1 upgrade for UK – truth or tease?

It would seem that the long-awaited Android 2.1 upgrade may be making the journey towards the West sooner rather than later – if recent reports are to be believed. After reports last week of the 2.1 update being made available to customers in Asia, Pocket Lint has reported that a statement advising a June arrival has not been retracted, according to Top.10.com.

Is this the news we’ve all been waiting for? Or have HTC pulled the wool over our eyes again? After all, we were meant to be receiving this update in October 2009 March 2010, but that never happened either, with the ‘official word’ pushing a release back to June 2010.

June’s here for another 23 days yet – will HTC turn this update into the new Gran Turismo 5, with a never-ending line of setbacks? Or will they stun us all and deliver the goods before June is out? My British cynicism cannot help but feel that the former is far more likely, but HTC have to release the update eventually. Right?

Don’t tell me you can’t see the sad face in this picture either.

I hope they release also to HTC magic.

I had a reply from HTC support saying 2.1 will happen in June.
I just don’t believe a word HTC say anymore.
IPhone 4 is becoming more appealing everyday.

By the way, 2.1 on the Hero is already in “the West” over here in the United States.

    Hi Kevin,

Here in the UK (and Europe), we don’t have the 2.1 upgrade yet – we seem to get a raw deal with these things.

We do have great bread though.

  • Jim

kudos on the bread comment :)
you forgot to mention a decent curry :P

“sooner rather than later”? it is already way late. there is no more soon, just late.

and it already was released in the west in May.

  • Jack Kemp

    Hi Monkey,

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but “the West” includes the UK and Europe too. This particular post relates to the UK.

And as above, while we miss out on software updates, we make up for it with castles and nice curry :)

HTC know they have stuffed up massively on the updates, yet they have done nothing about it. It is getting boring the conversations on will they or wont they….

The iPhone 4 is looking attractive over the HTC now. I would consider jumping ship but I do love the Sense UI etc….

I just wish HTC would listen to their customers…..they are rubbish at customer service.

Yeah, gotta admit getting really hacked off with this now.

A few of the guys I work with have their new HTC Desire phones with their updated OS and yet we’re still stuck with an OS that’s so far out of date it’s not even funny anymore.

If this is how HTC treat their customers, and let’s be honest most people who buy something like the Hero will be fairly tech savvy, I think my next phone will be from another manufacturer.

Sorry HTC, you’ve burned through any leeway I might have been willing to give you.

HTC are doing a lot of things right – we cannot deny this at all. But they need to take a leaf out of Apple’s book in terms of product support.

At least, this is my personal opinion.

However, HTC have a number of devices to support, while Apple realistically only have a handful. It’s easier to concentrate efforts on a couple of devices.

But still – this is no excuse really!

Still doing better than us poor souls on the Motorola Dext. It’s not even been decided if we will get the upgrade from 1.5 to anything else, with Motorola now caring about newer customers.

Got my upgrade on 3 last-night. Put the date forward a year and the download screen came up straight away. Might be something to do with me getting it unlocked though.

  • Colyn

dave, that was really helpful – I’ve just done the same with my HTC Hero on 3. Thanks very much.

  • Colyn

of course with this upgrade being FOTA, we get to keep all our personal information and all the apps we’ve downloaded… almost like having an iPhone!
