GM to Install Powermat Chargers In Cars

tagged , , ,

In what is probably the best use of Powermat technology yet, GM has announced that they will be installing their Powermat wireless charging in upcoming cars. If you’re not familiar with Powermat, it allows phones to be charged just by setting them onto a Powermat-enabled surface. As of right now, the technology is only available in specialized mats. However, the technology is slated to be pre-installed in various sufaces, like computer desks and countertops. Starting with the upcoming Chevy Volt mid-2012, however, GM will be building the technology into car consoles and investing $5M into Powermat technology.  Not only is this a very clever use for the technology, it also marks the first time a company has announced solid plans to build this technology into a particular surface.

Excited to have wireless charging in your car? What other surfaces would you like this technology built into? Let us know in the comments.

Actually what they should do is make powermat styled window mounts. THAT would be useful for the people who use their phone as a GPS and/or a media player for music (and for the naughty, video xD). I think that would be a bit more useful considering it would it the phone IN PLACE as apposed to sliding around in a little area :/

Also, you know those things are going to get drink all over them. There is no way of avoiding that so they’ll have to spend tons of money making sure that they are liquid proof, easily cleanable and resilient to cleaning so connections stay great.
