iPhone Market Share 3x Bigger Than Android (And Why That’s No Surprise)

Caution: Water on road during rain

And now for the obvious story of the day. A recent study shows that the iPhone OS has three times the market share of the Android OS.

Well no kidding.

Granted the iPhone has only been around for a three years vs Android (and the G1′s) two years, but let’s look at a few factors that may just slightly contribute to this:

  1. Pre-existing loyal following – Apple already had a gigantic following of Apple fanboys, err, I mean fanatics that were lining up to purchase the iPhone when it was released. Android was Google’s first foray into the mobile market and people really had no idea what to expect.
  2. Marketing – Before the Motorola Droid, and now the HTC EVO 4G, you rarely used to see commercials or ads in general for any Android product. Now compare this to the marketing behemoth that is Apple, and you could see how this might have a slight effect on consumers. Granted now you can’t watch TV for 30 minutes without seeing a droid or EVO 4G commercial, the previous years of iPhone marketing every and any where is hard to beat overnight.

So now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, on to the pie chart:

I’m going to trust in your ability to interpret data, so I won’t regurgitate the numbers above. I will remind everyone of this however, as anyone who’s ever taken a economics, marketing, or statistics class knows, it’s fairly easy to generate data in a controlled manner. For all we know this survey could’ve been conducted in Cupertino, California. Granted the Nielsen Company is pretty reputable, but stranger things have happened.

This has nothing to do with Advertising or fan-base, Android is currently selling more units than iPhone (in the US), its just that its not selling that many more, and the iPhone already has the lead position so it will take a long time for that position to erode on differential sales.

The reason is simply a longer time in the market, the general happiness of iPhone users with their existing devices meaning that existing Apple customers will tend to stay with Apple.

There is momentum behind Android and new Android device sales are currently outstripping new iPhone sales but it takes time to conquer market share.

Monthly Android device growth is amazing and in a years time, it may be possible for iPhone and Android devices to come to parity but iPhone HD may dampen the current trends as there are millions of consumers that will buy the device over the next 9 months before the sales die off again as those with contracts up for renewal await the 5th gen device.

I also don’t think that these statistics are fake. They make sense in the context of cumulative sales but all the momentum statistics favour Android. Both are true but need to be looked at together rather than individually for the big picture.

HTC was a relative newcomer? Do you know nothing about the mobile market? HTC had been around for years before Android ever was invented. In fact, they had already become the world’s #1 manufacturer of Windows Mobile phones. Plus, they were manufacturing private label phones for Palm, AT&T, Dopod, HP, etc.

Hardly what I’d call a newcomer. Come on guys, so some research before making blind statements to try and make a point.

    Statement removed.

Nice points… Preexisting loyal following and marketing

It should also be pointed out that going from 7% to 9% market share in one quarter is far more significant than going from 26% to 28%…

Maybe it should be restated as 29% growth for Android, 9% for iPhone.
