While the interwebz are a’buzz with the release of Gingerbread, there are those that find Android’s 2.3 release to be old hat. We’ve seen it running on tablets and talked about by Mr. Andy Rubin, but have thought – up until this point – that it would surely be the 3.0 iteration of Google’s mobile OS. However, the latest rumor from “a source” is that Honeycomb will be hitting virtual shelves as Android 2.4.
This would be surprising, as the amount of changes we’ve seen in leaks and accidentals show some major changes; changes that would indicate a milestone release, not just an incremental one. The way, however, that Google numbers their OS releases has always been a bit of a mystery. The release date, however, seems to coincide with the Q1 releasae we’ve all been hearing about. In fact, the source leaking all this info is saying that there will be a very large unveiling of Honeycomb (whatever the version number) at Mobile World Congress, which takes place in the middle of February in Barcelona, Spain.
While all this information should be taken with a grain of salt, it has large implications. If the change from Gingerbread to Honeycomb does end up being considered an incremental update, what does Google have up their sleeves for the 3.0 release, whenever that happens?
