Rovio working on in-app payment system, includes carrier integration

Rovio, the company behind the cash cow that is Angry Birds, has announced that they are working on an in-app payment system for selling new content without the use of third party software. It seems that Rovio wants to cut out the middle man, which is a pretty intelligent move on their part.

Furthermore, the system would also feature a system for carriers to retrieve a piece of the action as well, perhaps for allowing Rovio to charge the payments directly to the users wireless bill?

This will certainly be an interesting development to follow, and given how insanely popular the game has become, Rovio is poised to make a pretty hefty profit for selling additional content in this way.

That would breach Google’s Terms & Conditions for usage of Android Market. A breach that many have already implemented, yet I asked Google’s official representatives for Android from China, that attended the Google Australia Developer Lab not long ago, about this situation and they assured everyone that in-App payment (i.e. payment outside of the market’s payment channel) is not allowed. I pointed out that since others are doing it and not being blocked, this leaves those that do obey the Terms & Conditions to be less competitive. Perhaps those Google reps have NFI? Probably, because they also assured us Australian developers that we could earn money from selling Apps on Google Market (at that time it was still impossible for Australian Google Checkout accounts to hold Australian Bank Account details, thus not possible for google to actually do the payout bit).
