Speaking at LeWeb ’10 in Paris, Google’s Marissa Mayer discussed a new project she is spearheading which she feels is Google’s next big thing. They’re calling it “contextual discovery”, which in a nutshell means that Google is trying to figure out ways to serve up data to you based on your search history or location. Kinda creepy, right? Mayer had the following to say on the subject:
“The idea is to push information to people. We’re trying to build a virtual mirror of the world at all times.”
An example they use is as follows: suppose you’re in or near a restaurant and you’re on your phone. Wouldn’t it be cool if the menu for that restaurant just sort of popped up based on your location? I am all for innovation, but it sounds like Google is simply taking this a little too far. Hit up the source link for the full interview, and leave us a comment below and let us know what you think.
