Marissa Mayer says Google’s next big thing is “Contextual Discovery” — Google results without search

Speaking at LeWeb ’10 in Paris, Google’s Marissa Mayer discussed a new project she is spearheading which she feels is Google’s next big thing. They’re calling it “contextual discovery”, which in a nutshell means that Google is trying to figure out ways to serve up data to you based on your search history or location. Kinda creepy, right? Mayer had the following to say on the subject:

The idea is to push information to people. We’re trying to build a virtual mirror of the world at all times.”

An example they use is as follows: suppose you’re in or near a restaurant and you’re on your phone. Wouldn’t it be cool if the menu for that restaurant just sort of popped up based on your location? I am all for innovation, but it sounds like Google is simply taking this a little too far. Hit up the source link for the full interview, and leave us a comment below and let us know what you think.

First of all I don’t want any suggestive anything from my device if I’m not asking for it. This would totally piss me off. I’m already using this google link for my home page http://www.google.com/webhp?complete=0&hl=en so i don’t need to use Google instant. All cookies are cleared which is how I want it when Firefox shuts closes hence instant was right there just waiting for me. Hope Google gives you the choice to turn it off! I love Google but if they keep this up, then well Bing it may just be!

sounds cool if there is an app you can go and ask for it. people seem to think Google wants to invade their privacy and life i believe Google is just trying to offer the most innovative forms of technology and software. For some it seems like Google is getting a bit stalkerish but there really not interested in who we are and what we do during our own personal time just in our interests in order to advertise and attract the public in the most proper and precise manner.
