While there are still some devices out there that haven’t seen the light of Android 2.1+, it looks like the latest stats from the Android Developer Blog are showing that Eclair and Froyo are now taking up 77% of all Android devices. The breakdown goes as follows:

That puts the percentages at:

  • Android 1.5 – 7.9%
  • Android 1.6 – 15.0%
  • Android 2.1 – 40.8%
  • Android 2.2 – 36.2%

Altogether, it looks as though Google may finally be getting their Android fragmentation issues under control. As long as we continue to see these numbers moving in this direction, it will be a win-win situation for consumers.

“Google may finally be getting their Android fragmentation issues under control.”

I don’t get this. What kind of control are you talking about? What have Google done to control this?

The number is getting better because we are in the end of a release cycle. As soon as 2.3 or 3.0 is out (in a few weeks), we’ll again see lots of complaints. We’ll again see 2.0-, 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 all over the place.

As long as there is the carrier between customer and Google, this problem is not solved. It sucks when you have the kick-ass hardware but can’t upgrade to the latest software.
