Verizon Third Android Phone To Include Mi-Fi Support

2

by Chris Moor

Verizon Android PhonesEarlier last week US carrier Verizon announced plans to offer 3 Android handsets in their line-up by early 2010.

While we know that 2 of the Android phones will be well-known devices (presumably the Motorola Droid and a tweaked HTC Hero), the third device will be manufactured by a smaller company and will have the ability to act as a personal router.

Certified through Verizon’s Open Development program, this new Verizon Android phone will include Mi-Fi support that will enable the handset to act as a personal Wi-Fi router.

Other requirements of the ODP require that vendors also meet the E911 emergency standard, along with the the ability to activate the device OTA, and have support for SMS text messaging.

The device is expected to made available in early 2010.

An Android phone that will officially do wifi-tethering!? (not via a 3rd party ROM)

    That has my attention!!

If only it was the Sholes/Tao/Droid that was doing it. THAT would make it just about the perfect phone (Android or Maemo, dedicated number row on a physical qwerty, dpad, clean/sleek look). The only thing that would make it better is a 4.1″ screen ;-)

Tethering sucks, at least in comparison to MIFI. I have 3 PCs in my household, all of which might need to be online at any given time. My ideal, cost-effective solution is to buy a smartphone with a 5GB dataplan that can act as a MIFI device, similar to the Sierra Overdrive or the Novatel MIFI 2200.

If this “Verizon Third Android Phone” fulfills the hyped promise, then I simply MUST have one.
