Task Killer Apps in Android devices may be deceiving us about how important they really are. The following will let us in on some facts about what they actually do to help us, or possibly hinder our multi-tasking habits.
Much like a “Force quit” or “End Process” function on a Mac or PC, Task Killers do just what they say, they kill tasks (or process) that run in the background that use up available memory and battery life. They never prohibit the app from being started, but rather keep it from running until needed.
The thing we have been misled on is how much this actually helps us. The programs running may hardly use any memory or battery at all. They just sit and wait for interaction. The key is how much CPU these tasks are using, or many other “hidden” tasks that don’t show up in our task killer apps.
As you can see, there are some processes here that are using 12% of the CPU. When you have 4 or 5 of these running (which isn’t difficult to do with the amount of apps available now), you’ll start to see some sluggish and unresponsive feedback from your Android.
Not to worry, this isn’t something that plagues Android devices alone. This problem affects all smartphones, essentially, any device running apps. Good thing is that with Android devices, there’s much more freedom to configure your handheld to do what you want it to do.
