It was inevitable, I suppose. Awhile back, after AT&T started in with the price tiering and data capping, Verizon made mention that they thought it might not be such a bad idea to follow suit. Looks like they’re keeping good on those ideals, as the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Big Red is going to start in with the data tiers. According to the WSJ:
Verizon Communications Inc. Chief Executive Ivan Seidenberg said the company’s wireless arm expects to introduce its own form of tiered pricing, possibly over the next four to six months
There is still speculation as to whether this new direction on data pricing is only for the upcoming 4G data network that is due up to the public by the end of the year, or if this will apply to all data. If this tiering is only relative to 4G, it’s an almost expected move: new technology is released, and valued high and therefore charged as more expensive to the client. But, if VZW is planning on moving this pricing plan to all mobile data on their network, they can definitely expect some backlash, from both consumers and the media.
Ivan Seidenberg, however, said that, while it may be heading for tiering data plan pricing like AT&T, they do not agree with the way AT&T values their data. Thank goodness for that.
