Leaked image of the Kindle Fire 2 surfaces

Amazon is expected to unveil the follow up to the Kindle Fire next week in New York City. It’s also possible they will announce both 7-inch and 10-inch versions. As far as leaked images go, things have been quiet, but The Verge just received one. We can’t be positive that this is a 7-inch or 10-inch version, but it does look like a 7-inch based on the scale of the keyboard.

The Verge also received another image, but was asked to not share it. According to them, it shows a streamlined user interface with less “chrome.”

Unfortunately the picture really doesn’t reveal too much. What really matters is the display, processor, and price. As far as the user experience goes, it was never the highlight anyway. We certainly don’t expect it to be a full Android experience, but it would certainly be a nice surprise.

I think the reason that Amazon has been very quiet about Kindle 2 is they are still trying to recover from Nexus 7. BOOM went the dynamite and knocked the air completely out of the e-reader / sort of Android / web browsing device. With Google expecting to sell as many as 8 million units and Apple bringing the iPad Mini to market in October, I can’t see any room for a limited use device with a sandboxed OS. And being that these devices sell for nearly zero margin, I can’t see Amazon coming to the market with a Kindle 2 priced so low you can’t pass it up. If it’s $200 – $250 (or more), it’s gonna now be perceived as ‘overpriced’ based on comparisons to the Nexus 7 (even if the Kindle’s specs are better) and soon to be iPad Mini (even if the Mini sells for $300). It’s a bad situation that Amazon is going to find itself in.

Hey, I’m just happy the pic has that little camera at the top. I can’t wait to order one.
