As HTC gear up for their London press event on Wednesday, the Global Certification Forum (GCF) has approved the HTC Hero handset.

It has long been rumored that the event scheduled to take place on the 24th of this month will see the official unveiling of the HTC Hero handset, and possibly the HTC Lancaster.

According to the GCF report, the HTC Hero (HERO100), will include support for quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE as well as dualband UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA at 1800/2100 MHz.

Both the HTC Hero and Lancaster handsets will feature HTC’s in-house developed TouchFLO 3D user interface (known as ‘Rosie‘).

It has previously been suggested that the HTC Hero will be exclusive to the Orange network in the UK, but will ofcourse appear in other countries with other operators.

I am getting really poor reception on my htc hero on orange compared with my htc tyn II. same problem with my wifes hero bought at same time. Any Ideas

facing the same here and poor battery life as a result. I contacted orange and after running diagnostics they decided to send me another one which arrived a few hours ago but still signal is very weak. On my sisters nokia 5800 and my mothers lg cookie they get full 3.5g and with their sims in the hero i still have rubbish reception. Could be the htc rom or maybe its a hardware issue. Anybody else on orange having these problems… Hopefully it will be fixed with an update, dont fancy storing all my data on the phone again just to replace the handset once more.

Likewise, very poor signal. hoping fo4 some big improvement

Contacted orange yesterday re the poor reception. They told me others hadn’t complained of this but would chase this up. If you are having a problem please do let orange know as it forces them to sort it out.

The thing is they do know…. that’s exactly what they said to me and I showed them this site. They’re just talking a bit of bs because they cocked up with the htc and dont want anyone to know it. Orange are always the worst people to get handsets off especially nokias handsets…. Orange insist on installing their own half arsed branded software on every phone which just screws them up. They’ve messed with the radio settings of the htc and are too bleeding ignorant to acknowledge it. Its up to someone who understands how and is brave enough to fiddle around with the hero and try different radio’s to come up with a fix or for orange to admit they don’t know a thing about handset os’s and release an update. Another thing, a lot of the apps which you can access from the htc magic and g1 have beeen blocked on the orange htc hero because orange isn’t on the open handset alliance so thats two things we have to suffer for now just because of sh*tty orange. Thanks to listening to my little rant about orange.

got an HTC Hero sim free, use “THREE” sim card and PROBLEM WITH SIGNAL, same sim card in other phone works fine, so it must be the phone considering other people also have same problem with different netwrok providers. Is there anything that can be done about it yet? Update of some sort or do we all have to send HTC Hero back (because it clearly breaks the Product Description Act and doesnt work to full capacity)

  • Nav

I’ve never heard of anyone who is satisfied with their reception on three regardless of handset :D

I’ve got an HTC Hero on T-mobile and I find the reception poor compared to my preivious HTC Tytn II (also on t-mobile). When I complained to T-mobile they said that they had not received similar complaints with the handset yet. I’m sending mine back until they can get it sorted out as I can barely make a phone call at home now.

In addition to bad signal – I get huge fluctualtions while standing still -= I have a sim free phone on Orange UK network. I contacted Orange in their shop where there was a signal booster – didn’t get full signal – other orange phones around me did – contacted HTC – told to talk to seller – seller said they compared it with another handset and the same signal was on both – must be a phone or firmware problem -hopeful for upgrade soon – apart from that I love the phone.

Got my Hero on Organge today. Although I can’t make a proper assessment yet because I haven’t had it long, my signal has been fine.

I received a Hero from Orange last week excellent piece of kit which I love.
Like the rest of you I have a huge problem I cannot make or receive phone calls due to the very poor signal strength, which drops all together more often than not.
My old Viewty was also poor but never dropped calls.
To their credit Orange have offered to change out the phone after seeing the problem first hand in their shop.

Its a pity that HTC cannot hold their hands up and admit that they have a serious problem. Perhaps a few hits in the telecom press will wake up HTC before an otherwise excellent piece of kit gets the big E

    Good luck to all!

I have just taken delivery of an Hero on T Mobile and the signal at home is very poor.

I used to have a Nokia 5800 on T-Mobile and always had full 3.5G signal. Two weeks ago, I got the HTC Hero (also on T-Mobile) and I don’t get 3G reception at all!

  • David

Same thing here. I phoned Orange too and they’ve offered to replace my Hero for me. But since my HTC TyTN II didn’t have these issues on Orange I suspect the problem is with the phone itself. It’s disgraceful that HTC would put out a phone that, while being beautiful, works so so poorly as a phone!

  • Mark

Yes me too, I live in london, and get bad signal problems, I just travelled 4 stops on the overhead rail (walthamstow to Chingford, and could not send a text or make a call. HTC sort this out my Orange Hero is so lush I dont want to have to scrap it. I had a really old orange spv before and always got full bars wherever i went.

  • Danny

Same here poor signal but liove the phone, Orange sent replacement but still fluctuates from no signal to 3 bars. Waiting for Rom 2.1 on april 16th or is it a hardware issue, hope not as the best phone ever

  • Francis

    Wow,

Very surprised to find such a number of people with the same problem.

I couldn’t phone for days and was getting apoplectic with rage as clients couldn’t get hold of me.

Standing still and in a new location, I had the exact same issue, I couldn’t even contact Orange – when I did, before he cut off he started mentioning something about 3G/2G, I selected ‘Use 2G networks only’ (what’s the point of having a 3G phone??!?!?!) and now the only real change is that the signal fluctuates less frequently and is at one or perhaps two bars for longer periods.

If I physically move the phone, signal seems to disappear.

I’m getting exacerbated by this ridiculous state of living and want OUT!!!! If it’s the phone, they need some legal action on them; if it’s Orange, they need something.

A paying customer deserves their due.

  • Danny

Same problem here on Orange on 3rd HTC hero but missing calls all the time HTC support said wait for 2.1 but still waiting and Orange say its not a known issue!
