Download & install Froyo manually on your Droid Incredible

You poor Droid Incredible users sure have been through a lot. It seems that Froyo has been promised to you guys for weeks now. Finally though, it seems that Froyo has officially arrived. If you’re unpatient (understandably) and don’t want to wait for your phone to grab it OTA, then just follow these simple steps:

  1. Download the official Froyo update direct from Google
  2. Rename it to update.zip  (make sure it’s not update.zip.zip) and place it on the root directory of your SD card (meaning it shouldn’t be in any folders)
  3. Turn off your phone
  4. Press & hold Volume Down & the Power button at the same time
  5. Once the HBOOT screen appears, press the Volume Down button to select Recovery & press the Power button to select Recovery
  6. Once the triangle with the exclamation point appears, press & hold the Volume Up and Power button together
  7. Now using Volume Down, scroll down to apple sdcard:update.zip and select it (with Power Button)
  8. Pat yourself on the back for not throwing your phone out the window for putting up with Droid Incredible froyo news every other day
  9. Enjoy Android 2.2!

Won’t this method work like a factory reset and delete your phone’s data?

  • Brian

this for rooted phones? Or is this like rooting your phone. (i.e. can this void your warranty)

  • Scott Young

no this is for unrooted phones and will not void your warranty. It’s the exact file from google, instead of just waiting for it to come OTA you’re just updating manually

  • Brian

Will this erase the content as dinc mentioned?

  • Dan

    Times up, let’s do this.

  • Dan

Also, you may have to name your file “update” instead of update.zip. My installation failed initially, and when I went into ASTRO and opened “update.zip” it was called “update.zip.zip.” No recursing. Seems to be working properly now!

  • Joe Mama

Will try it out and leave a post about if it works. I don’t care if I lose my apps. File manager backs them up

  • Dan

Update: It worked PERFECTLY! So exciting. Kept my apps, music, pictures, contacts, even my wallpaper.

    Strongly recommend it!

  • Joe Mama

Verifying update package as we speak. So far just as the instructions say

  • Brian

WIll this prevent future updates from coming OTA? OR can it affect future updates?

  • Joe Mama

So far the only thing not listed was to select the reboot option when done. Phone is rebooting. Sits for a while with a green arrow pointing down with the sync arrows surrounding. Does a few reboots and and waiting for it to load. Got a crazy droid load screen with the droid eye. Seems to be stuck on the droid eye

  • Joe Mama

Mine seems to be stuck on the droid eye even after pulling the battery. Guess I will have to try again.

  • Brian

Of course my GF who can give a crap about it just got the update

  • Joe Mama

Just have to be patient!!!!! Very important. Just let your phone go through the motions and just wait. Again be patient. Froyo bitches!! Don’t be a little girly man about it. Checked my software info. Android 2.2. Do it now!!!!!!

  • SAC

Can anyone confirm that this is original and offical and that it aint some kinda root method!? I’d love to have it, but not if its gonna root/mess up my inc.

  • Dan

SAC- It’s the original. It’s from Google. It’s not a root.

  • Patrick

I have never forced any updates, rooted my phone, or anything more elaborate than download and install apps from the app store, but I wanted Froyo, so I tried this out.

Worked exactly as described, with a few minor additions: -The Reboot that “Joe Mama Says” described (11:06am).
-It takes a few minutes to move past the Droid Eye opening (also mentioned by “Joe Mama Says”).
-It takes a few minutes once your wallpaper/apps load to sync everything, but that is recorded via a percentage count that climbs towards %100.

This won’t allay anyone’s fears about it messing up the phone long term, but it was very easy, and worked exactly as advertised.

  • IronManCC

Well, like Patrick, I haven’t done anything to my Incredible out of the ordinary; but decided to give this a try. As stated, it worked as advertised, all my existing programs are there, plus some new stuff from Verizon (Amazon MP3 comes to mind, and some Google stuff). Went back to the Boot Screen and noticed that HBOOT had been upgraded from 0.79.0000 to 0.92.0000 and the Radio from 1.00.03.04.06 to 2.15.00.07.28. Have played around with it a little (…will do so more tonight), and so far…… VERY NICE! :-)

  • Todd

5 of us at work applied this update this morning with no issues. Does not wipe any data, apps etc. Leaves your home screen and preferences the way they were.

  • IronManCC

I wonder if the phone will still get flagged as needing the update (…i.e., Will I still get an update notice?), or if it’ll show on their end as already having the update? Guess we’ll see….. ;-)

  • Dan

    Here’s a taste of the 720p recording:

  • NightDrummer

Works perfect. Was able to run home and download it and install it all on my lunch break (as internet is crap at work). Everything is there exactly as before (with exception to the addition of Froyo goodies). Follow the instructions and install without fear! :)

  • DC

My browser doesn’t work anymore and when i try to unlock the phone the menu button does not drag the unlock bar down anymore (which i think is just part of the update…) but my browser wont go to any sites other than the homepage… and the adobe showcase link i downloaded from the market doesn’t load up neither!!!

  • Jay

for some reason i feel my phone wayy slower than before… anyone with the same problem?

  • http://photo.davemangels.com dave

Just successfully updated my unrooted Droid Incredible running 2.1 to 2.2. Thanks!

  • skarletknite

this thing is 94mb?? i am at work and i cannot connect my usb cable to my DI…so i am trying to email it to myself and then save it to my root directory from there. but i cannot send a 94mb email!

  • IronManCC

DC: Sounds like maybe some setting got fudged in the update process – Can you re-do it and see what happens?

Jay: Slower…? Mine is definitely FASTER….. ;-) Unless you’ve got a ton of programs running in the background or something….

skarletknite: Yeah, it’s almost 93MB. You don’t have a flash drive to copy it to?

On a personal note, I’ve really been enjoying the upgrade and have no complaints. One little issue popped up this morning; but I have no idea if it was at all related to the upgrade. I shut the phone down for the night and when I started it this morning, it found phone coverage but was not connecting to 3G. Checking the settings, Mobile Network was grayed out and showed as “Turning on….”; but nothing was happening. Just for the heck of it I switched to Wi-Fi and was able to connect to my wireless router that way. While on Wi-Fi I disabled Mobile Network. Then I disabled Wi-Fi and enabled Mobile Network and it connected and all worked as it should. Did several power cycles, just to make sure, and no further problems. Just throwing this out there, in case anyone else runs into a similar issue. ;-)

  • Mad Dog

upgrade from all android ver? for all phone?

  • skarletknite

thanks IronManCC. i can’t use a flashdrive at work. they encrypt all data anyway. found that out the hard way when i tried to insert my sd card from my work bberry to my DI…everything on the card gone. luckily it was backed up but dont want to attempt a flash drive.

  • s

When I try to to update i get this message:

    assert failed: file_getprop(“/system/build.prop”,”ro.build.fingerprint”)==”verzion/inc/inc/inc:2.1-update1/ERE27?161494:user/release-keys”

    Installation aborted

  • Joe

When you rename the file only put “update” leave off the the “.zip” part for it will be put there automaticaly. At least that is what I had to do. I’ve been enjoying froyo!!

  • IronManCC

skarletknite: Sounds like security is pretty tight at your work. Since the 93+MB file is already zipped, I don’t see it being able to be compressed much smaller. Only other option I can think of is having access to a CD burner…. ;-)

s: Have you rooted your phone or installed custom ROMs? Sounds like a file update error (i.e., the update.zip file is not the right version to update the software on your phone).

  • Marcos

My update wont work. it says E: Can’t open /cache/recovery/command

then it says no such file or directoy..

    any ideas?

  • SAC

Just yesterday i was impatiently about to install this “official update”, but unsure of the ramifications i didn’t and waited. Long story short, OTA update was sent to my phone about 4 hrs ago. Froyo yes!!

  • DADDYD

im not getting service not its got a x where my bars should be and it keeps rebooting also says system error

  • DADDYD

sorry says…. precess system is not responding

  • viper

i’m having the same issue as above at first entering recovery i get the cant open cache/recovery/command. then after trying update.zip i get the assert failed message. i was rooted but un rooted with the downgrade reflash, just stock 2.1 now, so i could accept the new update, but i’m not getting notified about the update and i figured id try this manual method.

  • DADDYD

i am at the same point as viper it wont work any ideas ?

  • viper

Hey check your build number if its not 1.22.605.2 you need to update to that first ill post link later when I’m at my computer. I haven’t actually done the update to froyo yet but I did update to the above number and now my phone is suddenly bugging me about the ota update. Where it wasn’t before.

  • DADDYD

    ya mines 1.22.605.0

  • viper

hey guys, ok for the ones with the assert failed message as i said above check your build number mine was 1.22.605.0 it needs to be 1.22.605.2 link below to where you can download and how to install the update to 1.22.605.2 your phone should then alert you to the ota update or accept the manual. mine is currently installing the ota 2.2 froyo so post back in a bit if this fix actually does work.

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7933281#post7933281

  • viper

success! now running the OTA froyo update. the updating to 1.22.605.2 seems to be the fix for those with the assert failed error.

  • Carol

Hi guys! I have tried everything! I have the zip file on my SD card i checked it with Astro. It has the name of update.zip then I get the message Install from sdcard finding update package, opening update package, verifying update package…then E: signature verification failed installation aborted. What I’m I doing wrong? anyone? Please I been trying to do this for like 2 days. Oh and my build is 1.22605.2 i like double checked all that. please, any help would be so appreciated :)

  • Jeff

I was having the “assert failed error” and thought maybe I had f’d my phone up for good by all the “root” crap I had tried to put on there…but thanks to Viper’s note about the need to update FIRST to 1.22.605.2 from 1.22.605.0, I am now running Froyo and extremely happy about it! This is def. the fix for anyone having failures with the manual update and assuming you have the file named properly to begin with.

  • DJ

will this work for the new Cricket’s Sanyo ZIO by Kyocera?

  • viper

carol, is your sd card formated in FAT32?

  • Carol

Viper, U know I have seen this FAT32 stuff what is that? how do i format my SD card. I got it from the verizon web site and its a 16GB. I always had an SD card in all my phones but I never formated them. I’m gonna google it and see how to do that. Is it easy process? Thank u Viper!! I thought no one was looking at my little question :(

  • viper

no problem, its easy, connect phone to computer as disk drive, go to “my computer” and right click on the drive that represents your sd card, select “format”, theres a pull down box at the top of the window that opens pull that down and select FAT32, you can just leave the rest default settings, click format acknowledge the warning about removing all data (make sure you backup anything you want off the card prior) thats it when its done copy your update.zip back to it and retry.

  • Carol

I did everything!!and still it says the same thing! now i have NOTHING on my SD card and it has the FAT32 on it what I’m I doing wrong? I did ALL the steps, even some dude on youtube had the steps, just like it says on here and i did the same things before. I did. update nothing, then tried update.zip nothing! is that weird? U know I got the message last tues saying i have my 2.2 update i hit download now and it didn’t do anything. I waited and hr and still nothing! so u think they will send it to me again OTA? because this wont work at all for me.

  • Carol

but again thnks for tying to help me Viper, this just has me all wacko! And I have done stuff to my old blackberry before like loading new “leaked” software on it! so THOUGHT i knew what i was doing?! guess not! oh well, thanks again and have a great Labor day :)

  • DJ

will this work for the new Cricket’s Sanyo ZIO by Kyocera? ????

  • JeffSanDiego

Yes, does anyone know if this update technique works with the new Cricket Zio Android smartphones?

  • genaropr

Will this work on Cliq XT?

  • DINC user

+1 internets to Viper! I’ve been searching all day for this fix.

I couldn’t get the method to work in the OP. I had build 1.22.605.0 and my card formatted as FAT.

    1. I used windows to convert to FAT32 (after backing up everything first).

    2. Went to the site Viper pointed out (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7933281#post7933281) and updated my build to 1.22.605.2.

    3. Then updated using the method in the OP.

The update process took about 20 minutes for the phone to complete. All my settings and apps were still there!

  • fauxfire

Great post. I was checking constantly this weblog and I’m impressed! Extremely helpful information particularly the last section :) I care for such information a lot. I used to be looking for this particular info for a very lengthy time. Thank you and good luck.
