In the recent flood of Android devices seeing upgrades to their OS in the recent weeks, it looks like the Samsung Galaxy Portal on T-Mobile can be added to the crowd. The device, which has been floating around on Android 1.5 since its inception in March, is now able to be updated to 2.1 via a download and install. According to the announcement:

“Just to make you all aware if you don’t know already, the Android 2.1 update for the Portal has now been approved and is available for download via the Samsung PC Studio software now”

The upgrade is relatively painless: simply download the Samsung update software and run through the motions. To any of our Galaxy Portal touting readers out there who try out the update, be sure to let us know how it goes in the comments!

When updating mine it got stuck on the installing bit and has buffered it! It’s been on 0% for over 10 minutes

Yes some phones will stick at that point. The way to fix it is to leave the New PC Studio program running and don’t try and fiddle with it on the pc screen – and then take out the battery on the phone. New PC Studio will know that something has not worked and advise to restart the phone in recovery mode. Still don’t do anything with the pc at that point.

    Do the following:
    1) Disconnect the usb cable
    2) Put the battery back in the phone
    3) hold the volume down, camera button and power on button at the same time for a few seconds. The phone will boot to a bluish icon and the word downloading will appear. This is the phone booted to recovery mode.
    4) Now plug the usb cable back in
    5) Now press “Next” on the pc screen.

The download will now reverify, and then it will download to the phone and install.

Simply wait until the phone has rebooted itself and allow sufficient time for the new system to install and settle down. Then disconnect the usb cable and all should be well running 2.1

If you fiddled with the pc before doing all of the above then start again from scratch. If it hangs at the same point, then follow the above procedure.
