With all the emphasis placed on the entertainment and social media aspects of smartphones, academic functions are often overlooked. This is a shame, really, as there are some pretty incredible applications being developed that have very practical use in the fields of math and science.
Researchers at MIT have developed an app framework which allows for scientists to design a custom Android application for carrying out calculations based on data generated by the Texas Computing Center’s Ranger supercomputer. The Ranger does the bulk of the work, but the applications allows for quick, on the fly manipulation of the data for real time use in the field.
