There are some pretty cool Android devices on AT&T now, including the Samsung Captivate, and the Dell Streak. The only problem is, AT&T has decided to lock down the devices so that non-Android Market apps can not be installed. Fortunately, there is a workaround for Dell Streak owners which does not require having to root the device. Just follow the steps outlined below:
- Dial *#*#307#*#* on your Streak. Other than a quick flash on the screen, it will look like nothing has happened.
- Go to your app drawer/program menu and tap a new icon labeled EMList. If the icon is not there, turn off the Streak. It should be there when you turn it on again.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap app_security.
- Tap update unknown resource property to enable it.
Now, simply tap the Home button, press Menu, and go to Settings > Applications, where the “Unknown Sources” check box is now available. That’s all there is to it! If you ever want to reverse this, simply dial *#*#308#*#*.
