The Samsung Vibrant is certainly an awesome phone right out of the box, but why not make it leaner, meaner, faster, and louder right? Below are some of my favorite mods/hacks that I have found and am using on my device. (But be sure to check out our general Galaxy S tips and tricks as well.)
Set The Volume to 11!
This mod will boost the maximum volume of your phone. It is unknown if this will cause any damage to your device to run it at full volume but it may cause hearing loss if its up next to your head. Root is not required for this.

Lag Fix Without a PC
This one will seriously speed up your phone by moving some of the slower I/O operations to the SD card. This will take up space on your SD card and there are reported issues with corruption of the new virtual partition over time. If you really know what you are doing and can flash a stock ROM or recover from a NBE (Near Brick Experience) then use this at your own risk. If you don’t know your odin from your adb, you might want to steer clear of this one and wait for an update from Samsung.
1. The update.zip install are all the files needed.
2. Place it on your internal sdcard
3. Turn off your phone.
4. Hold down Up+powerbutton+Menubutton for a couple of seconds until u see the galaxy logo .
5. Use the up and down buttons to get to update.zip.
6. Press menu button on update.zip to select it
7. It installs root, correct busybox (1.17.1) as well as all the scripts needed for the fix and the ‘MCR Scripts’ app to run the scripts. (NOTE: This version does not install superuser.app which is needed, although the beta update.zip does, so read ‘requirements’ above if needed)
8. After install, the phone restarts.
9. Go to the newly installed ‘MCR Scripts’ application from the app list, open it and choose from 3 scripts. For example, Lagfix10024 is the 1gb ex2 version.
10. The script should run and take a few minutes.
11. You should see an ‘all complete’ prompt, and this means you can close the application.
12. Run quadrant to test if the fix was applied.

Replace Stock Camera With Captivate Camera App
This is a pretty neat mod that is fairly safe to do because you can easily revert back to the stock camera app if you don’t like it. What this does is replace the Vibrant camera app with the one from the Captivate. Who knows why they are actually different but some people, myself included, prefer the screen layout of the Captivate camera better.
- Go to this thread at the XDA forums.
- Download the zip file Camera-Update-signed.zip
- Copy zip file to your phone (I use Dropbox)
- Use ROM Manager to reboot into recovery mode
- Update using the zip file (will need to browse to it)
- Reboot your phone and you have a new default camera app

Install the Original Mobile Access Point App
Samsung actually created a nice mobile Wifi Access Point application for the Galaxy S phones but T-Mobile in their infinite wisdom had it removed (to make room for highly useful tools like Avatar no doubt). Well now you can install it and create an Infrastructure Wifi Network. Again, this mod requires you to install the zip file using Clockwork Mod.
Note: If you are using a custom ROM rather than the original ROM, this may not work.
- Download the zip file (download link)
- Copy zip file to phone
- Use ROM Manager to reboot into Recovery Mode
- Install the Zip from from SD Card
- Reboot
To use this, go to Settings –> Wireless and Network –> Mobile AP Settings
You can now setup and manage you Wifi hotspot
