Fennec 2, aka Mozilla Mobile, has been under development for a while now, but is expected to come to Android in the form of a beta this fall. The first version wasn’t exactly a huge success, so Mozilla has made some key changes to try and overcome that fact. First of all, support for multiple processes, which they have dubbed “Electrolysis”, has been included, meaning everything will not be bundled into one large chunk anymore.
Also, they have included something called ‘Layers’, which will place some of the rendering burden on the GPU, giving the CPU a bit of a break. Some other features include Firefox Sync, for syncing bookmarks and data between your browser and phone, and multi-touch support (finally).
Hopefully this version of Mozilla Mobile will be a significant improvement over its predecessor. Still, Mozilla may be too far behind the curve at this point to make any kind of an impact in the mobile browsing market.
