Sprint to pull the plug on production of future WiMax devices

Sprint has been fairly busy lately preparing for its LTE network launch along with finalizing the finishing touches on their recently announced LTE smartphones, theĀ Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper 4G. If you’ve been wondering whether Sprint was going to continue supporting WiMax, well the answer is yes and no. Earlier today, senior vice president of networks at Sprint, Bob Azzi announced that Sprint will not launch any additional WiMax devices going forward and will mostly focus on the deployment of its new Network Vision initiative which involves combining their 3G, 4G and iDEN network towers into one single, more efficient super tower. The new project is estimated to reduce the cost of providing voice and data by 50%. Now do keep in mind that Sprint does intend to continue maintaining current WiMax towers for the foreseeable future in an effort to support the millions of subscribers that have already invested in a WiMax device. With that in mind, there’s no need to throw your Evo 3D out the window just yet.
